The band's edge has dulled considerably, in spite of guitarists Kyle Cook and Adam Gaynor's best efforts on "Angry" and "Mad Season," but for the most part they're heavily sedated throughout, as are bassist Brian Yale and drummer Paul Doucette, begging the question: Where's the band?
On "Mad Season" the band serves up another slick collection of R.E.M. and Pearl Jam-influenced post-grunge classic rock tailor-made for ubiquitous radio play.
Unfortuntately, Mad Season is not on par with these albums.

Mad Season - The title track is 180 degrees opposite If You're Gone.
Mad Season is a different direction for Matchbox 20, even so far as taking a new name (matchbox twenty.) While not well received both publically and by critics, Mad Season is a much more mature album than Yourself, and illustrates the potential present in the still young matchbox twenty.
It's far from "More Than You Think You Are." That album was not as good as either "Yourself" or "Mad Season." I personally am a fan of all the songs on this album...specifically "Leave." Really good review, by the way.

The first two tracks on the album are 2 of the best album tracks I've heard in a very long time from a band with such a commercial reputation.

On top of the brill Mad Season, which is released as a single, the album is packed with amazing tracks that can be played over and over, especially Black and White People, Beautiful Girl and Angry to name but three.
the contrast between the 1st and 3rd album is outstanding, but both albums are superb, Mad season was obviously matchbox twenty's attempt to change their style but failing, this can even be seen by their alternative dress sense in the pictures in the inside sleeve.
With only one previous album, Matchbox 20 front man Rob Thomas has already racked up three Grammy Awards, while his band was chosen as Rolling Stone magazine's Best New Band, having sold over 10 million copies of their debut by the close of 1999.

 RollingStone.com: Above : Mad Season : Review
That Mad Season are capable of tremendous power and also succeed with such a subtle song proves that the band is – at times – more than the mere sum of its parts.
Mad Season may not have the special chemistry that makes their respective groups so successful, but they do have presence, and more importantly, they take artistic risks and set out to make something fresh on Above.
Perhaps the last word on Mad Season, though, comes in "Long Gone Day," a lustrous duet in which Staley trades verses with Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan, whose honeyed growl is in its element among the cool percussion, sensitive sax and pliant bass.

More varied in style and more consistently successful in execution than its debut disc, Mad Season rocks harder, croons more sweetly, adds new flourishes and even finds some funk in the title track.
