Adrian's Album Reviews : David Bowie
John Lennon co-writes and plays on one song on this album.
This album is a brilliant hybrid of music.
"Lodger" is one of Bowie's most underrated albums.

Fantastic Voyage Lodger review David Bowie GoldLyrics.com
"Lodger" is possibly the only album re-issued by Rykodisk with "bonus tracks" that work at the end of the album.
The album picks up with "D.J." "D.J." is one of Bowie's most megalomaniacal hits, and is far more enduring than other frequently heard songs like "Golden Years" and "Let's Dance." "D.J." manages to meld the avant-garde with a popular dance beat and very edgy lyrics.
But "Lodger" recovers with its original closing song, "Red Money." "Red Money" can best be appreciated after listening to Iggy Pop's "Sister Midnight," which uses the identical music and some of the same words.

The Gudgeon: A third listen to David Bowie's Lodger
One of the best songs on the album.
I don't like the way the song has borrowed its title, but this is probably the highlight of the album.
It is a better album than its individual tracks, but just a tiny bit too much of its time.

 Lodger - Lyrical Interpretation
`Lodger' is an album of 10 songs, lifted from an initial tape of 22 recorded tracks.
The ambiguity of `Lodger' as being a finale to the projected trio, can be derived from it's profusion of words and varying tempo's, which render it difficult to associate with the previous two albums.
The responsibility, echoed on `Up The Hill Backwards', on the following album, is universal.

 Yassassin
Yassassin was the second single to be released from the Lodger album, released in Holland.
http://www.teenagewildlife.com/Singles/Y1979/Title.html

 David Bowie
This album is also notable as a stepping stone for the career of the late Texan guitar virtuoso Stevie Ray Vaughan, who played on the album and was to have supported Bowie on the Serious Moonlight Tour, but left the tour over a pay dispute and was replaced by Earl Slick on the guitar duties.
Ziggy Stardust was a concept album relating the career of an extraterrestrial rock singer.
Even though releasing David Bowie in 1967, the initial release of the 1969 album was also eponymous in UK (in States it bore the title Man of Words/Man of Music).

Lodger - David Bowie - Review: "The alternative punk album."
Although it doesn’t identify with any of the other tracks of the album, it has enough variation of sounds and production quality on it to be able to pin point which album it comes from.
The Next track, Boys Keep Swinging, which is yet another single from the album, works as an individual track, and extremely well too, but does not have a place on Lodger.
So, six really great tracks, which should be on the album, one that is great, but should not be on it, and 3 that the less said about them the better.

Rykodisc Catalog - Lodger - David Bowie
Though this was easily the most upbeat of the three Berlin albums, songs like "Red Money" (which uses the instrumental track from Iggy Pop's "Sister Midnight") and "Look Back in Anger" provided plenty of dark edges.
The orchestrations of LODGER were chosen at random from a chart of favorite chords on the blackboard; and "Boys Keep Swinging" achieved its garage-band sound by making the musicians switch instruments, often to things that they weren't sure how to play.
And though it's the most pop-sounding album of this period, songs like "African Night Flight" and "Yassassin" made use of a wide variety of world-music influences.

ALBUM Lodger - Bowie 70s Chronicle
Another unreleased track which was recorded in 1979.
Lodger, by far, was a very nice album, with promo videos for Look Back In Anger, DJ and Boys Keep Swinging.
The last of the Eno trilogy and Bowie& last album of the decade.

 Music Reviews David Bowie
Personally, I agree that it's a wonderful album.
There are several good songs on this album...
This is the first album I bought by Bowie.

Amazon.ca: Music: Low (Rm) (Enhanced) [ENHANCED]
I have listened to this album, and I want to review it.
Finally, this was an album with genuine angst, not the commercialized angst force fed by record companies through bands like Korn, Slipknot, or Blink 182.
This is the album that could have been but wasn't.

 Amazon.com: Music: Lodger [ENHANCED]
Lodger's first side is very weak, and it's a shame that the current version of the CD doesn't have the bonus tracks that came out a while back, but hey.
Lodger, in a sense, is different in the sense that it foreshadows most of Bowie's later albums: it's a mixed bag.
At times the album doesn't sound as inspired as Low and most of "Heroes" does, and it lacks real standout tracks, but as a whole it's a very fun and fairly good album.

 Lodger by David Bowie CD
Although some songs don't really gel (DJ) this album as a whole is entertaining, edgy and strangely unsettling.
LODGER (1979) was third in Bowie's Berlin trilogy, his collaboration with legendary producer/experimentalist Brian Eno, which began with HEROES and LOW (both released in 1977).
David Bowie is reallly doing some of his best experimental music with touching songs like 'Move On' which has great lyrics, and intense songs like 'DJ' and Look Back in Anger.

"I Pray Ole" is not on the original album.
"Boys Keep Swinging" was popular in L.A., and a remake by Susanna Hoffs was recently produced for a tribute album to Bowie.

the lodger - untitled - cd review
Songs that are happy to go verse-chorus-verse, songs that are happy to be catchy, songs that make you want to sing along.
When Ben (the tunesmith for The Lodger) released his first three-track demo as a solo project, it showed that his taste and song writing were spot on.
The recordings (it being a one man and his Cubase job) may have been far from perfect, but what was undeniable was the quality of this man's tunes.

David Bowie - Lodger - On Second Thought - Stylus Magazine
One complaint that can be leveled at the album is that while these ten songs are all individually great, they often don’t cohere into a pleasing whole, especially on the first half of the album.
On a purely musical level it is probably the finest track on Lodger, seeing the album out on a high of chanted, indelible chorus, and note-perfect soaring music, bringing to mind skyscrapers and stock markets.
This album was the last gasp of an old regime.

 Black Tie White Noise
He lands in a pose that recalls the cover of the "Lodger" album while the cover of his next CD, "Outside," is hinted at with an inclusion of the Bowie artwork which became that album's cover.
As said, the piece is tagged with three music video clips for songs from the album and it is best to discuss these separately.
Bowie opens this part of the video with "You've Been Around." It prompts him to start talking about Tin Machine and his current decision to do a solo album since the song was a shelved piece by the band which he resurrected here.

 Back At The Beeb
But he also played Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's Alabama Song - which was a single in 1980 - and Look Back in Anger from the Lodger album.
Of the 10 songs he played, most came from his recent Heathen album.
He performed the track Bewlay Brothers - from his 1971 album Hunky Dory - live for the first time, but had to use lyric sheets to keep up, because, he said, "there are more words in this than War and Peace".

 Monaghan's Daydream-6/9/98
The irony here is that while on the previous three albums Bowie's lyrics were sparse and sometimes absent - on this track he's suddenly in need of a woodcutter editor.
The true tragedy of Scary Monsters is that the vastly superior and extravagantly adventurous Lodger album is buried beneath the weight of posterity's delirious yet blind hype.
Only the vague subtlety of the lyrics, stop Fashion from becoming a song suggestive of the embarrassing pseudo-political posing of such Tin Machine numbers as Under The God and Crack City.

i still consider low to be the best berlin album, but this is surely one of the best albums of the 70s.
this is an absolutely brilliant album, but also one of bowie's most challenging.
but when you let this liberating album grow on you, it proves to be a revelation more complex than most.

 David Bowie's Reality
These were just two on it, and I kind of plucked them off for this album because I'm enjoying the part of just being the fan.
I'm also doing rock stuff like 'Hang Onto Yourself' from the Ziggy Stardust album which is going to be quite a surprise.
Over the years I've had many songs that I put onto a list because one day I'll do a Pin Ups 2 album of covers.

Scary Monsters by David Bowie CD
Fresh off his Berlin trilogy (LOW, HEROES, LODGER), David Bowie released SCARY MONSTERS, an album that continued the cool, detached, electronic-flavored sound he'd been experimenting with on the aforementioned records.
Robert Fripp's distinctively angular guitar style contributes greatly to the resulting Kraftwerk-flavored funk of "Fashion" and the jittery paranoia of the title track.
I do believe Bowie DID have a major impact on the New Romantic period with this album, especially with the incredible use of synthesizers and electronic sounds.

He listens to David Bowie albums for a while, along with K.W.Jeter, hoping to discern a sign from the alien realm.
I knew at the time everyone would explain it away by saying that the pressure of writing the album was getting me down; making me imagine things.

All-Music Guide (C) 1994 by Matrix Software, Big Rapids, MI 49307 Please submit correction
Ace sidemen can't save this spotty album, but the title track and "Fame" (cowritten by John Lennon) became worldwide hits.
The clipped beat of that album's Stay and Golden Years permeate his cover of Cream's I Feel Free (guitar solo courtesy of former Spiders From Mars bandmate Mick Ronson) and surface elsewhere almost as a recurring theme.
Regarded by many to be Bowie's best album, Bowie took the melodicism developed on HUNKY DORY and beefed it up with a punchy, rigid, freeze-dried "rock" setting.
