 Biography: Little Walter
Walter was backed by guitarists David and Louis Myers and drummer Fred Below (known as the Aces, this group had been working with Junior Wells), he made his first records for the CHESS subsiduary CHECKER records.
Amplifying the instrument by means of a small microphone held in his cuppped hands, Walter's harmonica took on a swooping saxophone-like sound that was perfectly wedded to the distinctive, imaginative, highly exiting character of his improvisations, derived as they were from listening to jazz saxophonists and probably bop musicians.
Then, Walter's constant approach to the songs first two choruses is much to deliberate and controlled to be the result of mere chance.

Walter also recorded frequently as a sideman for Chess/Checker in the years 1952-1968 in addition to extensive touring, including a tour of England in 1964 with the Rolling Stones.
From 1952 to 1968 Walter recorded about 100 titles for Chess, of which about half were issued on record as of the early 1970's.
In 1948 he added Walter on harmonica, Jimmy Rodgers on second guitar, and Leroy Foster on drums to his band, and this group of musicians defined the modern blues band through their experience playing in Chicago's clubs.

With Waters's band in early 1950s Chicago, Little Walter contributed to a style of electrified blues that would forever change the dynamics of pop music.
Eventually, Walter wound up in Chicago in the city's Maxwell Street area, where musicians congregated to jam every Sunday morning alongside vendors hawking their wares.
Walter lives on in the music of any harmonica player who tries to bend a note and play the blues, many of whom worship the man for his brash approach to the instrument that so changed the sound of American music.

Contributor's Comments: This is the man that inspired Otis Spann to say, "The harmonica is the mother of the band."
He was the first of many luminaries to hold the harp chair in Muddy Waters' band, as Waters created amplified blues.
He may not have been the first person to clasp a mic directly to the harp, and lay a little echo on, but very few of his followers have ever ventured beyond the territory that he mapped out, and most of them have only explored a small part of it.
