 eWire :: spring 2001 :: The Allstonians (page 2 of 3)
We are treated with respect in Boston but still, as a ska band, you are sort of treated as the little brother, the "not-so-serious" musicians because you play a silly, happy music called ska.
How about this: Beatles, XTC, Frank Sinatra, punk, new wave...a real musician should be influenced by all genres of music or else he becomes a member of a band like The Romantics, nothing wrong with that band but they write the same stuff over and over and over and over and...
The bigger the number of ska bands, the bigger the chances are that the band will suck.

Nevertheless, the 1989 recording marks a turn back toward traditional jazz in Corea's career, and the bulk of his subsequent recordings have been acoustic ones.

Instead of doing traditional a cappella songs of the '50s, today's a cappella musicians cover artists like U2, Peter Gabriel and the Dave Matthews Band, while also pushing to do more originals that sound like what's playing on mainstream music stations.
Five O'Clock Shadow, a six-man a cappella group based in Boston, and others like it are part of a new generation of performers who have discarded the doo wop days for a more contemporary sound.
Although a cappella musicians view their vocals-only music as what sets them apart, contemporary practitioners of the art form don't want that to be the lasting image.

 The Great Swing Band Arrangers
In the early days of the XX century (the 'teens and early 1920s), arrangers mostly learned what they could on their own by experimenting and talking to other musicians, since there really were no books on "big-band" arranging at the time.
Much of the music we recall from the Big Band era, is remembered not because of the melody of the music, or the interest of the Lyric, but rather for the beauty of the Arrangments used by the Big Bands.
His father was a violinist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and his mother was an accomplished cellist who had studied with Klengel at the Leipzig Conservatory.

Following is a list of tunes Guster has covered live; the "Band" listed is the band best-known for the song in question, not necessarily the original writer.
As with most musicians, Guster tends not to directly reveal the meanings of their songs, preferring instead to let the listener derive their own meaning.

After an unending list of musicians (the first time I saw them it was 2nd drummer Nick Knox and rhythym guitarist Kid Congo Powers of Gun Club fame) they have apparently settled on drummer Harry Drumdini and bassist Slim Chance, who provide the band with a thunderous bottom end.
Boston’s The Amazing Royal Crowns (not to be confused with L.A.’s own retro swing band The Royal Crown Revue) definitely had their work cut out for them.
Singer Jason "King" Kendall, decked out in a "wife beater" to show off the prerequisite arm full of tattoos, which stretched almost as long as his sideburns, certainly had the required amount of machismo/bravado to front this type of group, basically taunting, if not daring, the audience not to like them.
