Franz Peter Schubert: Master of Song
Although this song is widely performed all over the world, the text most commonly used with Schubert's music is not the poem the composer originally set to music.
The Schubert family made music together regularly, and Herr Schubert was soon able to form a string quartet, in which the elder sons Ignaz and Ferdinand (1794-1859) played violin, the father played cello, and Franz played viola.
Goethe was said to have been "favorably impressed" with Schubert's music.

 ON CLASSICAL. Franz Schubert biography
Schubert's compositions for piano include a number of sonatas as well as the Wanderer Fantasia and two sets of Impromptus, D. 899 and D. He also wrote a number of dances for piano, waltzes, Ländler and German dances.
Schubert wrote for mixed voices, male voices and female voices, but by far the most famous of his vocal compositions are the five hundred or so songs, settings of verses ranging from Shakespeare to his friends and contemporaries.
Schubert's Octet, for clarinet, horn, bassoon, two violins, viola, cello and double bass was written early in 1824.

 AMARCORDES - Schubert
Schubert was equally blessed with a symphonic laboratory at the Stadtkonvikt, and in October of 1813 he completed his first symphony (d82, in D), in which Schubert would have had the pleasure of both conducting and playing among the violins.
Schubert also completed more than a dozen solo songs and partsongs to mixed texts, including the headlong Der Musensohn (d764) and the tender Geist der Liebe (d747).
Spaun later recalled that, upon hearing Vogl sing some of Schubert's songs, Mosel declared Schubert to be ‘by no means just a prolific inventor of melodies, but a thorough musician’.

Just awesome, man. Beethoven didn’t write as much as Mozart or Schubert, but what he produced is all worth listening to.
If a composer is not on these pages, there’s a good chance that while I’ve probably heard of them, I haven’t actually heard any of their compositions.

That goes for all classical and contemporary music, including jazz, so that Schubert is not the only composer to suffer the indignity of merely being listed as the source of the music.
Only by reading the tracks listed on the ballet class music CD could one discover that the ballet pianist who made the recording plays Schubert.
During the era of the 78 record, music deemed appropriate for ballet was packaged for listening, presumably at home, where the listener could hear the works in their entirety.

Most of these pieces can be best described as "ambience" music.

I'm convinced that Franzl composed this on guitar, since the traditional piano accompaniment is so guitaristic that it is practically playable as written.

He was called "the eighth wonder of the world" and "the great musical prodigy of the age" during his lifetime, but today the prowess of Thomas Wiggins, better known as "Blind Tom" Bethune, is barely a footnote in music history.
As an adult, Blind Tom reputedly had a repertory of 7,000 pieces, of which about 100 were his own compositions.
For example, 398 arrangements of British folk songs alone are listed among his complete works.

The Fantasy-pieces arose out of Holloway's long-term preoccupation with Schumann's songs, and form an ingenious 20th-century instrumental commentary on Schumann's Liederkreis, included in its entirety on this CD, framed by Holloway's Praeludium and the remaining pieces in his commentary.

 Ludwig Van Beethoven: Concertos
The soloist enters with a few improvisatory bars taking the violin to the top of its register to sing out the first theme.
Given the 'undynamic' nature of the oboe from a Beethovenian perspective, one can assume that the music would have been very melodic in content without too much conflict.
Beethoven first performed the work at a concert in Prague (1798).

In the 17th century the term is used, like concerto, for certain vocal compositions accompanied by instruments, e.g.
Mozart's most elaborate overture, that of Die Zauberflöte, could not possibly be the first movement of one of his later symphonies; nor could the finale of his "Jupiter" symphony (which has often been compared with that overture because of its use of fugalo) conceivably be used as the prelude to an opera.

Apart from the opera we have one Schubert song after a poem by him (
Schubert could barely wait till he had completed it and, after studious holidays where he wrote teasingly "he had already composed and sung the music for the main scenes" [2], Bauernfeld could solemnly give the composer the complete libretto on 10 July 1826.
It was Schubert’s last operatic attempt, one of the few works death prevented him from finishing (another being the Symphony in D, D936A), and a work Schubert was speaking vividly about on his deathbed.

 Ludwig Van Beethoven: Viennese life
Thanks to a genuine interest and enthusiasm for all culture, the arts flourished - especially music, with many of the world's greatest composers living in Vienna - Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler being just some of the many illustrious names to the city's credit.
The main gates (where Anschütz had read Grillparzer's moving funeral oration on March 29th 1827) were locked but Bernard had been the day before and knew another way in around the back!
After a prolonged lunch at nearby Grinzing, time was pressing on and as Bernard was going to a recital later that evening we had to pass on a trip to the Kahlenberg hill which provides the most spectacular view of Vienna (oh well - next time!).
