Led Zeppelin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1974, Led Zeppelin launched their own record label called Swan Song, named after one of only five songs that the band never recorded for commercial release (the track was re-tooled as "Midnight Moonlight" by Page's post-Zeppelin band The Firm on their first album).
Led Zeppelin also featured delicate acoustic guitar on "Black Mountain Side", and a combination of acoustic and electric approaches on the reworked folk song "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." The immediate success of the first album kick-started the band's career, especially in the United States, where they would frequently tour.

 Led Zeppelin DVD review
The DVD on the other hand, is an astounding collection of live performances that spans from when they buried their moniker as The New Yardbirds and took flight under the name Led Zeppelin in 1969 to one of their last, and most infamous, concerts at England's Knebworth Festival in 1979.
On the strength of their second album Led Zeppelin II the band tore through early favorites "Whole Lotta Love," "What Is and What Should Never Be," and "Bring It On Home," which showcased Plant as a worthy blues harpist.
As if those numbers weren't impressive enough, the DVD shipped quadruple platinum upon the day of its release and the CD single platinum.

No Zeppelin song was ever released as a single in the UK, and there were a total of about three released in the U.S. (all because of Atlantic rather than the band).
The second DVD would be a mixture of performance, starting with a 1972 performance of Immigrant Song that blends visual footage from an Australia performance with the audio of a Los Angeles show.
If Led Zeppelin found their way to the top of the charts - even if only for one week - it would be a defiant statement to the record labels.

 DVD Times - Led Zeppelin
This DVD was simultaneously released with a 3xCD live album compiled from new material, which answered the one complaint Led Zeppelin had regarding their back catalogue - a good live album.
During the time the band was in existence, Led Zeppelin were rather more keen on spreading the word via albums and concerts that singles or television shows and Page has admitted that not only is there very little footage ever having been recorded but what there is here was difficult to obtain.
The final footage available, from Led Zeppelin's 1979 concerts at Knebworth, are of a band with not a lot left to prove and they look relaxed on-stage without any of the extravagant showmanship of earlier years.

Led Zeppelin are responsible for one of those handful of FM radio staples that regularly chart well in the endless and "boring-as-bat-shit" Top 500 Songs of All Time, yet no one will admit to liking, Stairway to Heaven.
The band really did burst from almost nowhere and by the time of the first performance on Disc One of this two-disc set, had already released their second album, and were well on the way to being a very successful rock band.
There is not a great deal of Led Zeppelin visuals around, never being a singles and video band, so this is likely to be the last Led Zeppelin DVD you will need to buy.

Only a handful of live recordings were made during Led Zeppelin's decade-long run atop the rock 'n' roll charts, most notably the Madison Square Garden performance recorded in 1973 and released several years later as The Song Remains the Same.
This DVD collection -- together with How the West Was Won, the three-CD box set of additional archival audio recordings released in tandem with it -- will only enhance their legacy.

DVD-Audio Review: Led Zeppelin - ‘How The West Was Won’
As I say, it’s not bad, by any manner of means and it brings home the often repeated axiom that Led Zeppelin were so good that rudimentary chrome tapes of their concerts, taken from a microphone tied to a broomstick held aloft at a live concert were worthy of a listen.
Apparently Led Zeppelin were the most bootlegged band of all time, with some 384 ‘official’ ones you can actually buy — in some safety now that the irascible Zeppelin Manager Peter Grant has gone to his grave, for he was ever given to thwacking people found to be in possession of a Zeppelin scam-disc.
Andy has already mentioned that the recordings show their age, which applies equally to the dedicated stereo track (which offers nothing over the CD counterpart) as it does to the surround alternative, but what most listeners, myself included, are likely to be somewhat disappointed by is the nature of the multi-channel presentation.

Led Zeppelin-How The West Was Won (DVD-Audio) (1972)
The audio mix on the DVD release is almost identical to that of the DVD-Audio, so if you are interested in a taster of what this DVD-Audio release is like, that is one song you should most definitely check out.
Needless to say, the entire two disc package is edited very well so that songs flow seamlessly into one another as though the listener was experiencing an uninterrupted concert.
This is the case most of all during Whole Lotta Love, a staggering twenty-three minutes of jamming, the band members constantly bouncing off one another and bringing to life an excellent medley that features Hello, Mary-Lou and the Elvis Presley classic Party.

The Royal Albert Hall show is the earliest of the bunch, recorded in 1970, only months after releasing the Led Zeppelin II album, and they were already on their way to reaching superstar status.
The Song Remains The Same concerts were not some of Zeppelin's best performances, the song selections were not the best (and too few), and the concert footage was interrupted with annoying behind the scenes footage and fantasy sequences.
As the only official document of the Led Zeppelin concert experience, at the time, The Song Remains The Same was a "must-have" for every fan, but was always somewhat unsatisfying.

Led Zeppelin DVD - DVD Movie Central
Some would say that Led Zeppelin did not invent heavy metal, that their offstage debauchery and open interest in the occult makes their music dangerous, that their sound and success was a great example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts, and that they blatantly stole many of their early riffs.
Their name was perfect, as their masterpiece "Stairway to Heaven" begins as a lyrical acoustic piece set in a peaceful pagan forest and then builds to a Bolero-like climax heavier than anything rock had heard before.
Late at night, listening through headphones while the world was sleeping, I discovered what millions already knew: The Beatles wanted to hold your hand, Chicago wanted to make you smile, but Led Zeppelin wanted to give you every inch of their love!

It was a pain in the ass for them to make, because as a band, they wanted people who came to their concerts to really have a unique experience and thus shunned cameras, recordings, and the media from their performances.
The idea for the DVD was to relive the concert experiences, both for those who are nostalgic fans and those who weren't around the first time to experience it (me included :D)
In fact, I love so many bands from the 70s, simply because every musician that came out in the 70s was either incredibly talented or brilliant at music or at singing.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s an awakening of interest in the power and magic of the blues among younger listeners led to the so-called "blues revival".
Old-time acoustic masters and electric originators had their careers revived, and white kids in England and America plugged in.

 Led Zeppelin-DVD (1970)
As Robert Plant states during an interview on this DVD, singles aren't representative of an entire album, so one song on a single can easily be taken out of context, and Led Zeppelin are a very good example of the fact that extreme dollar-driven marketing isn't required for a band to gain mega-popularity.
Disc 1 contains a twelve song set from the Royal Albert Hall which was recorded in 1970 shortly after the release of their second album.
Most of my friends became familiar with this band through their older siblings - Led Zeppelin wasn't on the radio back then and they certainly weren't in the singles charts either.
