Their first, self titled album is a black metal album with Norwegian lyrics, but all the later albums have been sung in English and with the change of language the music has also evolved.
The band was formed in 1995 by guitarist Øystein Brun, who left his former band MOLESTED because he wanted to explore the more melodic sides of metal.

 Utter Trash--Borknagar
I wrote lyrics for 5 of the songs, Vintersorg has done 3 of the songs and Lars Nedland has done 3.
By 2000, however, the current line-up was in place with Vintersorg on vocals, Asgeir Mickelson on drums, and Lars Nedland on keyboards (bass player Tyr recently left the group, and Asgeir handled the bass parts on the new album).
On their latest CD, the aptly titled ‘Epic’, the band is once again pushing the limits of heavy music, mixing some of the most brutal and heavy riffing you’ll find anywhere with calm, folk-influenced passages.

ANDY WINTER - Offers Updates On WINDS, AGE OF SILENCE - AZ Heavy Metal
Lars Eric Si (Eikind) has been recording and touring with a band from Finland called BEFORE THE DAWN, and Carl August Tidemann has finally completed the debut album with his other band TRITONUS.
The lyrical concept is already written by Lazare (Lars Nedland), and in my opinion it is the perfect continuation to where 'Acceleration' left off.
"As far as what my fellow band members have been up to so far this year, Lazare (Lars Nedland) has been busy making a new SOLEFALD album, and he is just about to start the recording of a new BORKNAGAR album as well.

The album was an instant hit and in 2000 they released their second album, "Strange Old Brew", which featured new members Tchort (guitar), Vrangsinn (bass) and A. Kobro (drums).
After three years of absence the band finally returned with their debut album, "Black Shining Leather", which also featured Lars Nedland on drums, in 1998.
After the release of the second demo, "Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern", in 1993 they were signed to Avantgarde Music where they released the EP "Through Chasm, Caves And Titan Woods" in 1995.

BeatTheBlizzard>In Vain - Will The Sun Ever Rise (EP)
The clean vocals by Sindre Nedland sounded a bit like Vintersorg (Vintersorg, Borknagar, Fission) and Lars Are Nedland (Age of Silence, Ásmegin, Borknagar)(which I would like to think is a relative due to same last name), and the band should with no doubt take this as a compliment.
In Vain was a new band name in my ears, and when I was listening to their sample I didn’t expect their music to be that good as it actually was.
It’s very important to precise that In Vain is no ordinary extreme metal band, but mixes together genres like progressive black and death metal, yet with a harmonic touch with clean vocals and softer parts.

Although, when the band -- Øysten G Brun, guitars; Lars A Nedland, synthesizers; Asgeir Mickelson, drums; Jens F Ryland, guitar; and Tyr on bass — and Vintersorg play/sing "clean," it becomes something that will appeal to progressive metal fans.
The mostly howling-wind like vocals of Vintersorg will tell you right away that it isn't Russell Allen, Daniel Gildenlow, James Labrie, Geoff Tate, or Ray Alder (to name a few) behind the mic exhorting whatever message or concept that is being exhorted.
And, as much as I don't particularly like the so called "cookie monster" vocals, there is something liberating about their ferocity and aggression, even if Borknagar aren't a particularly aggressive band.

With Lars A. Nedland (formerly of Solefald) in the band we can also be sure of some folk music touches which actually fits into the Borknagar sound very nicely.
It sounds ok but nothing more although it seems to work fine as a bridge or pause between the first and second halves of the album.
Nedland has also been honored with an instrumental keyboard sound which he has written all by himself ("Inner Landscape").

Only one album into their career and this band already has a firm grasp of where they want to go.
And that's exactly what they have accomplished on their debut Hin Vordende Sod & Sø, the band mixing frenzied black metal with viking and folk influences (the latter accentuated by some fine violin work courtesy of Ram-Zet's Sareeta, now a permanent member of the band), forging a pretty unique and very well-developed style.
Guest vocalist Lars Nedland (Solefald, and also now an official band member) lends a hand here, his unmistakeable clear voice providing an effective contrast to the traditional black roars of Bjørn Olav Holter.

With the Norwegian quartet holding its own stance in the black metal world, and with nearly three years of waiting since its last record, 2001's Empiricism, Borknagar's Epic proves that the wait was worth it.
On Epic, Borknagar creates a diverse, tight and aggressive mix of these elements that only very few bands can do.
There are no boundaries when it comes to the production of Epic, mixing the pyroclastic crunch, folk balladry, lots of double bass, keyboard orchestration, and clean-versus-growling vocals (growls being both high and low) provided by frontman Vintersorg (and guest Lars Nedland from Solefard).

July, 1997: Enjoyed in the less conservative parts of the underground, SOLEFALD"S unconventional debut album, The Linear Scaffold, was a black metal album with radical lyrics, cultivating an ambience of contradiction in an environment which eagerly sought uniformity and routinely identifiable traits.
In the midst of this historically creative musical movement surfaced SOLEFALD"S Jernlov demo.
It stood apart from its contemporaries because the musicians behind it, Lars (who is also Borknagar"s keyboardist) and Cornelius, were already bent on shattering the standardized paradigms of black metal.
