Krautrock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mostly instrumental, the signature sound of krautrock mixed rock music and "rock band" instrumentation (guitar, bass, drums) with electronic instrumentation and textures, often with what would now be described as an ambient music sensibility.
Krautrock is a generic name for the experimental bands who appeared in Germany in the early 1970s.
The release of Tangerine Dream's Phaedra in 1974 marked a divergence of that group from Krautrock to a more melodic sequencer-driven sound that was later termed Berlin School.

Mocking Music: A Brief Introduction To Krautrock
The problem with using "krautrock" as a description or as genre is the degree to which its most common conventions are a part of other contemporary genres; tape edits and distorted sound are commonplace in most electronica and all noise music, and the extended repetitions can be found in most ambient work and even post-rock.
Their music was more explicitly electronic than other krautrock groups, and as a result had a more lasting impact on music in the digital age.
The term "krautrock" gets thrown around a lot in relation to indie music; bloggers looking to show off their knowledge of music history often label experimental indie rock groups as having "krautrock sensibilities", "a distinct krautrock sound", and so on.

The Sound Projector - Fragments of Krautrock History
This remarkable artefact from the underbelly of the Krautrock movement was released by the famous Philips label in 1970 as a triple album in an exotic metallic gold and silver sleeve with a small circular mirror mounted on the front cover.
The music contained on these records was a mad mix of primitive electronic experimentation, fractured folk song and playground chanson, all of which was meant to illustrate the Trip-Flip Out-Meditation theme of the album's title.
However, such specialisation and selfishness is overturned by democratising releases like this which put the music back in the public domain, where everyone with a CD player who's so inclined can share in these delights.

These groups were all Krautrock aware and shared (besides the air of depravity and drugged out madness) a concern for futuristic pop music - a music for the NOW without the hippie nostalgia and bland complacement that affected the mainstream music scene on both sides of the Atlantic at the time.
For some, Krautrock has become merely the bands that Tortoise and Stereolab "ripped their sound off from" - the label "neo-Krautrock" now becomes attached to any rock group using old synths and metronomic beats, the same way the name "Beefheart" is whipped out for any band that has a spastic drummer and scratchy guitar.
Altogether the album has a melancholy air, which is lightened a bit by the vocals and drums.

Krautrock encompasses the psychedelia-inspired sounds created by a handful of forward-thinking German rock bands during the late '60s and early '70s: Can's funky ethno-trance, Faust's dadaistic collage-happy soundscapes, and Kraftwerk's rigid, fast- car-driving, early electro, Teutonic micro-groove.

Late 70s krautrock was a little schizoid, with some of the progressive concepts and psychedelic sounds being leached out of the music in favor of (presumedly) more commercially-acceptable flavors.
