The Kinks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kinks' first album for Columbia, Phobia (1993), was released and recorded by the band as a four-piece.
The songs on the 1967 album Something Else By The Kinks continued the musical progressions of Face to Face, but without the thematic consistency of that album.
Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Oasis' chief songwriter Noel Gallagher especially stressed that the Kinks were one of the bands that made the biggest impact on their songwriting as well as their development as artists and musicians.

 The Kinks
The Kinks left RCA and concept albums behind in 1976.
Their next album, The Kinks Kontroversy, though containing another hard-rock 45, "Till the End of the Day," was increasingly introspective, with songs like "I'm on an Island".
The Kinks' next concept album, "Lola Versus Powerman" and "The Moneygoround, Part One" (#35, 1970), was built around the story of trying to get a hit record.

 The Kinks
The Kinks' 1960s discography is messy, with a lot of uncollected single and EP sides and rarities that have cropped up on assorted compilation albums; there's also the failed late 60s Dave Davies solo album project, which has resulted in numerous bootlegs and one official 1987 UK release that I haven't seen.
This is a live in concert/live in the studio record with 29 songs, the core of which consists of 13 "unplugged" tracks that were released under this title in the UK back in 1994.
Apart from an old greatest hits disc and their American debut album, this was the first Kinks record to solidly dent the Top 40, and for the next several years the Kinks were again big news.

The first three albums (Kinks, Kinda Kinks, The Kink Kontroversy) stand as little more than collections of singles, b-sides and blues covers, but for all that, they're remarkably durable elpees.

As a group of unknowns, the Kinks had been given no say in the selection of songs or producer at their first proper recording session in January 1964.
In the United States, however, where the Kinks were banned from touring for unspecified reason, those albums were largely ignored.

Great hits are few -- the Kinks have made U.S. top forty only twice since their first best-of, with "Lola" and "Sunny Afternoon." But great songs abound, assembled with a konnoisseur's kraft (all right, I'll stop) from available (and deleted) LPs, uncollected singles (told you I'd stop), and the vaults.

 The Kinks
Problem is, the Kinks just didn't have the Animals' chops or the Animals' self-assuredness or even anything vaguely approaching the Animals' stunning image: the Kinks were just one of the hundreds of average British rock bands that accidentally happened to fall upon a new, rich, innovative sound.
This is the Kinks' eleventh concept album and third rock opera in a row (prepare yourself, Guinness!), this time built around a story of a certain 'naughty schoolboy' who was punished by the Headmaster for his conduct after which he became a hard and cruel person and 'grew up into Mr Flash'.
The song was 'Lola', the subject matter was the protagonist's brief acquaintance and flirt with a travestite, the melody was incredibly involving and memorable, the bombastic chorus ('lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-Lola') became the Kinks' arena signature, and the single was one of their biggest international smashes, reinstating them as major artists in the USA as well.

THE KINKS / THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY
The U.S. touring ban had also isolated the Kinks from the rock music world's largest market—a country that exercised a larger influence on international pop culture than almost all other nations combined—so it was inevitable that he became more introspective, more wistful, and definitely more English.
That man was the genteel, smarmy-charmy Ray Davies, who in the Kinks' jaunty songs pined intensely for the romanticized, storybook Merry Olde England of his boyhood.
And of all the 1960s' original British Invasion bands, the Kinks were certainly the most British-sounding.

Sorry, but any Kinks collection that purports to be "ultimate" better have one of their most well known hits -- "Destroyer." I can't think of any good reason why this song is not included and it baffles the mind why it hasn't been.
This excellent compilation is the best sounding Kink CD, surpassing the recently remastered Castle imports (which, according to an interview with Ray Davies in The Tracking Angle magazine, did not always use the original Pye masters, as advertised).

Any Kinks LP from this period (and you should own 'em all) seems to exist as a sort of photo album; each song a snapshot of and event, or a character (Ray even alludes to this twice, with the songs "Picture Book" and "People Take Pioctures of Each Other").
This pointed a new direction for the band, and they never looked back, as Englishness and "character" songs began to permeate the British music scene.
Unlike previous British hits, which tried to sound American in the vocal phrasing, Ray's accent on "Well Respected Man" is so thick at times that some lyrics are vrtually unintelligible.

Like most mid-1960s British rockers, the Kinks started out as an R&B group before they helped invent hard rock and ventured into sardonic, Beatles-inspired pop and refreshingly unpretentious rock opera with an English music-hall tinge.

The Kinks were working in their own homey little world, as evidenced by songs such as the album's title track, "Picture Book", about family snapshot albums, and "All of My Friends Were There" whose very un-rebellious subject is public embarrassment.
The Kinks' offering was rather unfairly ignored and may as well have been melted down to make more copies of The White Album for all most people evidently cared.
Ray Davies' songs for this album mainly concern the comfort of the past - or our rose-tinted version of the past - and as such were alarmingly out of step with the pop world of 1968, where the Stones sang of the Devil and fighting, and the Beatles sang of revolution and, er, chocolate boxes.
