Kanye West: Late Registration - PopMatters Music Review
West not only creates a great sound, he knows how to work it, bringing it in and out of the mix for impact, re-charging the song at any moment the rappers (or the listeners) need to be directed back to center.
West still brings the social commentary and humor, but it was his conflicted personality that made the first album so endearing; now the focus turns from artistic self-expression to ambitious music consummation.
Kanye's flow has improved, which ameliorates even the weaker moments on the album.

West's "Through the Wire," holding steady at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, will likely be the weirdest pop hit of the year.
This is also somewhat corny, since West himself put many of the album's tracks on four different mix-tapes last year.) Whatever argument you want to mount against or on behalf of West, there is one thing he can't be called: corny.
West did it repeatedly in songs like Jay-Z's "This Can't Be Life," Cam'ron's "Dead or Alive," and Talib Kweli's "Good to You." It became the overnight standard for East Coast thug rhymes.

Straight.com Vancouver Concert Reviews Kanye West
Kanye’s lyrical talents were plainly evident on his first album, 2004’s The College Dropout, but his initial run of concert appearances left critics doubting he’d ever be a great live performer.
West’s concert at GM Place last Sunday was a celebration of music in all its forms, quoting everything from classical music to Swedish synth-pop over its delirious 90-minute span.
Because they spend so much time sifting through old records, hip-hop producers tend to have an exceptionally deep and broad appreciation for music.

MTV Music Kanye West - Profile and Biography
More high-profile productions followed, and before long word spread that West was going to release an album of his own, on which he'd rap as well as produce.
Then, just as "Through the Wire" was breaking big-time at the tail end of 2003, another West song caught fire, a collaboration with Twista and comedian/actor Jamie Foxx called "Slow Jamz" that gave the rapper/producer two simultaneously ubiquitous singles and a much-anticipated debut album.
That bang happened during the opening weeks of 2004, when not one but two songs featuring him as a rapper ("Through the Wire" and "Slow Jamz") were downright ubiquitous, saturating music video television and urban radio all the while skyrocketing to the top of the charts.

Kanye West: The College Dropout: Pitchfork Review
One begins to wish there were even more examples of Kanye's mic-work, as the album is also laden with distracting guest appearance speed-bumps-- spots that safety-net the album's bottom line but dilute the spotlight on its lead performer.
Deleting the skits also cuts down on the strange logic of the album's anti-college stance-- someone should tell West that not everyone on the street has the ability and/or luck to make a living in the music biz.
And when words fail, Kanye can always fall back on his day job, camouflaging even less-inspired lyrical moments with affably absurd beat constructions like the vocoder/strings/handclaps amalgamation that carries "The New Workout Plan" past its lyrical juvenilia.

Conjecture about West revolutionizing the sound of modern hip-hop is mostly a fallacy.
The sprawling Late Registration is the year's most accomplished rap album, and in turn, he's done something that his heroes-- the Pharcyde and Nas, and father figure Jay-Z-- couldn't do: deliver on a promise the second time around.
