Blues - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One kind of early 1940s urban blues was the jump blues, a style heavily influenced by big band music and characterized by the use of the guitar in the rhythm section, a jazzy, up-tempo sound, declamatory vocals and the use of the saxophone or other brass instruments.
Blues is a vocal and instrumental music form which emerged in the African-American community of the United States.
Both recorded blues and country can be traced to the 1920s, when the popular record industry developed and created marketing categories called "race music" and "hillbilly music" to sell music by and for blacks and whites respectively.

 Rhythm and Blues
Blues shouters developed their raucous style in order to be heard above the big bands of the'30s and '40s.
The jump bands began as smaller versions of the swing bands, consisting of a rhythm section and a couple horns that played hard driving riffs and solos over blues progressions, and a boogie derived bass and beat. The overall rhythm accented the backbeats.
With the ending of the Swing Era the big bands broke into smaller units, jazz and blues going their separate ways to bebop units and dance house RandB "jump blues" bands that played music with a big dance beat and broad appeal.

Deacon John’s Jump Blues is an ambitious “attempt to craft a preservation document of music as a ubiquitous fact of life in New Orleans,” says Vetter.
The disc opens with “Jumpin’ in the Morning”, a classic jump blues first recorded by Ray Charles.

The single and most renowned exponent of this development is Louis Jordan who, originally with a relatively small band, began to make blues based records with humorous lyrics and a rhythm owing as much to boogie woogie as to the more traditional classic blues form.
It is also worth noting that the electric guitar, having played such a prominent part in the urbanisation of the blues, was here often relegated to an accompanying role - listen to Charles Brown records for example and you'll hear virtually all the solos played by Brown at the piano.
What distinguished many of these artists was the sheer breadth of material played - straight 12 bar, intrumentals, blues ballads and straight pop songs were all part of the scene at that time.

A blend of swing and blues that started in the 1930s, jump blues was especially hot in the post-World War II years, when big bands were fading in popularity and it was clear that an innovative new form of jazz called bebop was great for listening but hardly great for dancing.
Specialty, which was founded in L.A. in 1945, was one of the most prolific independent labels when it came to jump blues, the music that ruled the dance floor in the African-American community after the swing era and before the emergence of soul music.
Ranging from major hits to little-known rarities, this 1994 CD looks back at Specialty's jump blues output of the late '40s and early '50s.
