 (Josef Suk)
Josef Suk (1874-1935), a Czech composer of quartets, piano music, and symphonic tone poems, was Antonin Dvorak's son-in-law and favorite student.
Suk’s lusciously silvery orchestration is enchantingly gossamer in “Love and Grief of the King’s Children”, a concertante for solo violin a la “Scherazade.” The dynamic rhythms of “Folk Dance” are imbued with a pastoral exuberance.
Suk’s musical treatment of classic fairy-tale themes (metamorphoses, curses, magic potions) is suffused with an engaging child-like sense of wonder.

 Encyclopedia: String quartets
Should a composer create music for four other string instruments — for instance, three violins and bass, or violin, viola, cello and guitar — the instrumentation is indicated specifically.
This may result from the fact that the palette of sound is more restricted than with orchestral music, forcing the music to stand more on its own rather than relying on tonal color; or from the inherently contrapuntal tendency in music written for four equal instruments.
Although any combination of four string instruments can literally be called a "string quartet", in practice the term refers to a group consisting of two violins (the "first" and "second" violin), one viola and one cello.

Josef Suk - Quasi Ballata Op.17/1, Appassionato Op 17/2
These four miniatures typify Suk’s musical style, showing him firmly in the turn-of-the-century, late-romantic mainstream, although possessed of a very Bohemian rhythmic sense and a distinctly personal strain of lyricism.
However, his orchestral works have made a gradual return to the concert hall, and his masterpiece, the Asrael symphony Op.27 (1906), was performed in the CBSO’s final concert at Birmingham Town Hall in 1991.
Numerous of his chamber works have also held a place in the repertoire, foremost amongst these being the Four Pieces Op.17 for violin and piano (1900).

Sensible Sound: Dvorak: Violin Concerto; Romance; Josef Suk: Fantasy.
For those who have heard the composer's short symphonic poems, the Concerto will be familiar ground; it's filled with folk tunes and folk references, mostly bucolic in nature, sometimes seeming a bit patchwork in construction.
For what it's worth (and for all its popularity), I don't really think Dvorak's Violin Concerto is one of his most compelling works.

Before he had reached the age of 20, Josef Suk was being hailed as the musical heir of Antonín Dvorák, his father-in-law and teacher.
Suk received his first lessons from his father, a schoolmaster and choir director in Bohemia.
Suk's music has almost nothing of the joyful pastoralism that's so common to Dvorák, and in his orchestral pieces – in particular Asrael – Suk's use of huge orchestral forces to create vast expressions of anguish suggests closer affinities with Mahler.
