John Mayall, Blues Musician from Macclesfield, Cheshire, UK - 1933.
John heard a guitar player on record who he very much wanted in his band, and, come April 1965, it was goodbye Roger, hello Eric Clapton, the former lead guitarist with the Yardbirds, joins the Bluesbreakers.
John McVie, by then enjoying fame and fortune with Fleetwood Mac, suggested a revival tour and the Bluesbreakers were born again with Mick Taylor and the drummer from Laural Canyon days Colin Allen.
With John on keyboards, harmonica, guitar and vocals, a rhythem section of McVie and Flint, and Eric Clapton as the undoubted star of the show, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers entered what was to be the classic phase of its history.

DIG Internet Radio - Interview: John Mayall
Mayall's best-known song in Australia remains Room To Move, taken from the 1970 album The Turning Point, which was the theme for a much-loved ABC radio program in the 70's.
While Mayall's career stalled in the 70's, it was rejuvenated in the 80's with a Bluesbreakers reunion, albums on major labels and a determination by the blues man to continue to record and tour.
In fact, having had Eric Clapton pass through the Bluesbreakers, Mayall later recruited the sixteen-year-old unknown guitarist Mick Taylor, who was to join the Stones and play on some of their classic albums from the late 1960's to mid-70's.

Mayall recorded his debut single in early 1964; he made his first album, a live affair, near the end of the year.
From that point on, in fact, Mayall became one of the first rock musicians to depend primarily upon the LP market; he recorded plenty of singles throughout the '60s, but none of them came close to becoming a hit.
Some of these experiments (with jazz-rock and an album on which he played all the instruments except drums) were forgettable; others, like his foray into acoustic music in the late '60s, were quite successful.

Mayall's love of the blues grew in his childhood as he listened to his father's extensive jazz record collection that included Pinetop Smith and Leadbelly.
This year, Mayall has two DVDs, "Cookin' Down Under" and "Godfather/Turning Point," and a new CD called "The Turning Point Sound Track." Though Mayall is the father of six and grandfather of six more, he is truly the godfather of the blues.

The History of Rock Music. John Mayall: biography, discography, reviews, links
Mayall has created more music than any other bluesman and is the only musician who has tried, albeit irregularly, and managed fusion with both rock and jazz.
Mayall named his next album for the concept he was pursuing: Jazz-Blues Fusion (Polydor, 1972) but his vision was perhaps too ambitious for his composing limits, although the record does provide some suggestive hints for others to follow.
Mayall reconstituted the Bluesbreakers for Behind The Iron Curtain (GNP, 1985), recorded in Hungary, and for his first studio album in the longest time, Chicago Line (Island, 1988), followed by A Sense of Place (Island, 1990), Wake Up Call (Silvertone, 1993), and Blues For The Lost Days (Silvertone, 1997).

By 1963, at the age of 30, Mayall was no longer able to resist a life devoted to the music that first inspired him; he moved to London, cut his first solo album, and shortly thereafter started a new band: the Bluesbreakers.
The sole Mayall reference in the Stone piece is the inclusion of the classic 1966 record Bluesbreakers--John Mayall with Eric Clapton, the album that launched Clapton's career yet was great mainly because of Mayall's magnificently soulful feel for the medium and his sly, non- conformist style of blues songwriting.
Case in point: John Mayall--the revered blues innovator and legendary progenitor of the white-boy British blues--whose band, the Bluesbreakers, has at one time or another contained such names as Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, John McVie, Coco Montoya, and Eric Clapton.
