Johann Strauss I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Strauss died in Vienna in 1849 from scarlet fever.
With Johann senior's open declaration of his paternity of a daughter borne to Emilie, Maria Anna sued for divorce in 1844 and allowed Johann junior to actively pursue a musical career.
His step-mother sought to place him as an apprentice to a bookbinder Johann Lichtscheidl, but he took lessons in the violin and viola in addition to fulfilling his apprenticeship.

Johann Strauss II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Strauss' music is now regularly performed at the annual Neujahrskonzert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, thanks to the efforts of the late Clemens Krauss who performed a special all-Strauss programme in 1929 with the established orchestra.
The highlight of the Strauss triumvirate was displayed in the concert of 'Perpetual Music' in 1860s where his aptly titled 'Perpetuum Mobile' musical joke op.257 was played continuously by all three Strauss brothers at the helm of three large orchestras.
Many distinguished Strauss interpreters include Willi Boskovsky who carried on the "Vorgeiger" tradition of conducting with violin in hand as is the Strauss family custom as well as the famous Herbert von Karajan and the opera conductor Riccardo Muti.

 Johann Strauss, Jr. Biography
Johann II will forever be known as the Waltz King for his more than four hindered irresistible Viennese waltzes, polkas, operettas, and so on, but he must also share honors with his father and two younger brothers, all of whom were part of the unique family that has become synonymous with concert dance music.
Strauss was glad to have 20 assistant conductors relaying the beats of his baton to the outlying districts.
For almost a century their hearts beat in there-four time to the violins and batons of the Strauss dynasty: first the great Johann, than the even greater Johann II, aided by the younger Johann's brothers, Josef and Eduard.

Of his remaining operas, Capriccio (1942), a 'conversation-piece' in a single act set in the 18th century and dealing with the amorous and artistic rivalries of a poet and a musician, is the most successful, with its witty, graceful, serene score.
For a time he was head of the State Music Bureau and he once obligingly conducted at Bayreuth when Toscanini had withdrawn.
When Germany was defeated, and her opera houses destroyed, Strauss wrote an intense lament, Metamorphosen, for 23 solo strings; this is one of several products of a golden 'Indian summer', which include an oboe concerto and the Four Last Songs, works in a ripe, mellow idiom, executed with a grace worthy of his beloved Mozart.
