History of Jimmy Rodgers, Blue Yodeler
Jimmie Rodgers, alone with his guitar, recorded two songs, "Sleep, Baby Sleep," and "The Soldier's Sweetheart," beginning a legacy of over 100 recordings which, 60 years later, continue to inspire listeners and other musicians.
Jimmie Rodgers' musical upbringing was as checkered as his home life.
As much as Jimmie Rodgers represented a break with past traditions in country music, typified in his parting of the ways with the Tenneva Ramblers, he also must be viewed as a point of common ground for devotees of many disparate musical idioms, including blues, old-time western, Hawaiian, jug band, and jazz.

 Jimmie Rodgers
Jimmie's aunt was a former teacher who held degrees in music and English, and she exposed him to a number of different styles of music, including vaudeville, pop and dance hall.
Jimmie convinced the band to travel to Bristol, but on the eve of the audition, they had a huge argument about the proper way they should be billed, resulting in the Tenneva Ramblers breaking away from Rodgers.
No wonder Jimmie Rodgers is to this day loved by country music fans.

 Glossary: Rodgers, Jimmie
Jimmie Rodgers was born around 1897 and began recording in the 1920s.
Van was not the only musician to be influenced by Jimmie Rodgers, as shown by the track listing for the Jimmie Rodgers tribute album, released in 1997 on Bob Dylan's own Columbia distributed label.
From just the two song titles named above it is pretty obvious that Van is an admirer of Rodgers.

Jimmie Rodgers: The Father of Country Music
Rodgers was not the first musician to sing “Yo de lay hee-ho” between verses of his songs, but he made it such a trademark that some people assume country music had always included yodeling.

Rodgers co-wrote many of his songs, sometimes by reworking older songs, and often by writing a tune while another writer supplied the words.

Nolan Porterfield, Jimmie Rodgers: the life and times of America's blue yodeler
But few people realize that Jimmie Rodgers was every bit as crucial in the history of pop and the American music business as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Bob Dylan.
Two appendices detail Rodgers' live performances, and list all 13 of Rodgers' songs known by the "Blue Yodel" title, giving recording and release dates and variant titles for each.
Aside from finally compiling all the known facts about Jimmie Rodgers in one place and dispelling a number of myths, perhaps the most valuable of this book's contributions is the chapter on Rodgers' recordings and discography.

 Jimmie Rodgers conference
Jimmie Rodgers' knack for rearranging old folk and "hillbilly" melodies and singing new songs like they were resurrected favorites earned him the title, "Father of Country Music."
Rodgers' improvement upon "long forgotten relics" or singing new songs in the old traditions had "the ultimate consequence" of influencing a major segment of the popular culture and preserving some of the past's folk songs, added Porterfield.
The Rodgers celebration also will include a photo exhibition of the musician's life at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Jimmie Rodgers Jamboree at the Odeon Theater, a commemorative concert at Severance Hall, and a Jimmie Rodgers Symposium at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

 JIMMIE RODGERS; Biography
Rodgers' voice and guitar itself, haunting and pure, strong yet vulnerable, rising out of recordings made nearly 70 years ago, still has the power to fascinate, to inspire, to excite and to calm, and to conjure an entire world in a few quick images.
In August, Jimmie records in Dallas, TX and in November he goes to New Orleans, LA and back to Atlanta to record.
Peer recorded many singers and instrumentalists, including the equally significant Carter Family, in addition to Rodgers during those weeks of recording, and those records' brisk sales fueled the growth of what was to become the country music industry.

Although Rodgers constantly scrabbled for material throughout his career, his recorded repertoire was remarkably broad and diverse, ranging from love songs and risque´ ditties to whimsical blues tunes and even gospel hymns.
Jimmie Rodgers’s impact on country music can scarcely be exaggerated.

Jimmie Rodgers is a talented performer who reached his peak of popularity in the late 50's.
He put albums such as his Windmills Of Your Mind on the albums chart as late as 1969.
He came to the attention of record producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore who had left RCA to set up their own record label which they called Roulette.

Honky Tonks, Hymns, & the Blues
Jimmie is at the heart of it all with a seriousness and a humor that is befuddling….His is the voice in the wilderness of your head…” The album features performers like the late Jerry Garcia—who died during its recording—and Willie Nelson.
But beyond the echo of the yodel, Rodgers created a musical and performance style that referenced his audience’s personal experiences in songs such as “Waiting for a Train” and set the course of development for decades of commercial country music.
Merle Haggard talks about why Jimmie Rodgers' music resonated with listeners.

 JIMMIE RODGERS
Rodgers died of T.B in 1933, but left a huge influence on music behind him.
In other words, what Rodgers had - like Moon Mullican later - was an ability to interpret any type of music & this is why he influenced so many different kinds of singers.
However, it was a later 1927 record that really set off the Rodgers phenomenon - "Blue yodel" (or "T. for Texas") was a blues with a yodel & an inspiration to many blues songs & singers from then on (including Tampa Red’s "Bessemer blues").

 Jimmie Rodgers
Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and countless others owe, at least in part, their musical lives to the man who was a genuine legend and the Father of Country Music.
He was only 35 years old and his recording carreer lasted less than six years but he recorded no less than 111 songs and became the cornerstone on which an industry and the careers of countless entertainers was built.
He was a true pioneer and became an inspiration and guiding light to generations of songwriters, musicians and superstars to follow.

Jimmie Rodgers @ peermusic - The Independent Major
Jimmie was on his own, another twist in a long list of fateful circumstances that changed musical history.
Together, they recorded a few songs, including "Mississippi Delta Blues." For his last song of the session, however, Jimmie chose to perform alone, and as a matching bookend to his career, recorded "Years Ago" by himself, finishing as he'd started years earlier, just a man and his instrument.
The recording engineer hired two session musicians to help Rodgers when he came back to the studio a few days later.

"Jimmie Rodgers was my inspiration to become a country music entertainer back when I was growing up in Nova Scotia.
Despite a recording career that lasted only six years (1927-1933) and ended with Rodgers's untimely death from tuberculosis, it is safe to say that in many ways Jimmie Rodgers is still an active presence in country music.

In the late 1950s, Rodgers ruled the charts and he released dozens of singles and albums.
With the British Invasion, Rodgers charted fewer and fewer singles for the remainder of the 1960s.
He landed a few singles on the country charts in the late 1970s, but by the end of the decade Rodgers was no longer recording.

 Ralph Peer Remembers Jimmie Rodgers
A few weeks later, when I heard the test recordings made in Bristol, it was apparent that Jimmie Rodgers was tops as a yodeling singer, and I arranged to have his record issued quickly.
As a guitarist he was an individualist; that is, he had his own way of selecting his chords, and was what can best be described as a "natural" guitar player.
When I told Jimmie what I needed to put him over as a recording artist, his perennial optimism bubbled over.

Amazon.com: Music: Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute
Jimmie Rodgers (not to be confused with the similarly-named folk/pop singer of the late fifties and early sixties) died in 1933, but his music still has a significant following.
Cousin Jimmie was the original but these are credible copies from a who's who that demonstrates his lasting influence on the music that is most revered and played today.
This -the first release on Bob Dylan's own "Egyptian"label-is a moving and overdue tribute to a man justly seen by many as the father of country music, the great Jimmie Rodgers whose early death in 1933 was an appalling tragedy for the music world.

Pittsburg Post Gazette, Aug. 19, 1997 - Jimmie Rodgers Tribute
On "The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute," Bob Dylan waxes lyrical on the liner notes about the musician's impact on 20th-century popular music by first rejecting his tag as the father of country music as too limiting.
As the first release on Dylan's own Egyptian label, "The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute" makes a loving and persuasive case for a re-examination of the Singing Brakeman's impact on such talents as Leadbelly, Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, Al Jolson and Son House.
Long nicknamed "The Singing Brakeman," Rodgers managed to record seven years' worth of music before succumbing to a degenerative disease in 1933.

The disc jockey said the label had lost contact with the singer and wanted to find Rodgers.
He turned up later on RCA (an album in 1987) and then on Accord.
Here he heard another performer singing 'Honeycomb' and liked it enough to rearrange it to suit his own style (writer Bob Merrill's song had first emerged in 1954).

RollingStone.com: The Essential Jimmie Rodgers : Jimmie Rodgers : Review
Jimmie Rodgers is known as the father of country music -- he and the Carter Family single-handedly created the market for "hillbilly" songs in the 1920s and 1930s -- but he's also one of the most charismatic pop-music personalities of all time.
Rodgers' music was labeled "hillbilly," but its guiding form is the blues.
And his signature is the yodel, a device he turned from a Swiss yelp to something American and deeply soulful.
