 MAGNET Interview: Jesu
I had this fantasy during the making of the Godflesh album that I had this new band called Jesu.
I was writing the song at the time and couldn’t come up with a title so I called that song “Jesu.” It’s weird the way things come around like that.
I started doing a lot of stuff during the recording of that album where I really trying to get past the limitations of Godflesh, which was self-created.

My vocals in Jesu are influenced by mainstream pop music, but I don't use them like they're used in mainstream pop, as in leading the song and ultra-high in the mix.
Sometimes I think that this first album required this amount of work so as to set the stage for upcoming Jesu releases, in which I already have over 20 new songs.
Speaking of influences and similarities, Jesu has been compared to just about every band that has even the slightest similarity, some of which hold actual merit, while others not so much.

Jesu: Jesu - PopMatters Music Review
Jesu's album, for the most part, is terrifically built.
With eight songs clocking in at around 70 minutes, the album is every bit as expansive and epic as one would expect.
Though the shortest song is seven minutes long, Broadrick keeps each track interesting with electronic flourishes and pulsing noise combined with an unbelievably rhythmic backbone.

village voice > music > Jesu; Dälek's Absence by Christopher R. Weingarten
Jesu's Justin Broadrick was making his guitars equally expansive and mushy way back in industrial-metal hug-thugs Godflesh—he even blessed the first track on Napalm Death's Scum with an acidic drop of pre-MBV monolithic heartburn—but Jesu's debut LP is full-on dreampop metal, guitars slowly whacked like open-tuned gongs, distortion enveloping every atom of the mix.
Jesu is an ex-God godsend for agoraphobic metalheads who described the last Isis record as "pretty" (remember the agoraphobic indie-rock types that described MBV as "noisy"?), matching nine-minute sludge fuck-sessions with gorgeous, overly reverbed vocal harmonies.
Loveless would be a Taliban-rivaling FBI Most Wanted chart-topper if a half-decent album could be summoned before a tribunal and tried for crimes committed by bands that followed in its wake.

 Jesu . Jesu [prefixmag review]
Jesu’s self-titled debut is eight tracks of slow-motion riffage, lurching drums and barely there vocals -- definitely not the musical formula for your typical pop record.
But Jesu is a pop record, it’s just not one that will be confused with what the New Pornographers or Stereolab put out.
Broadrick is best known as the leader of the now-defunct industrial juggernaut Godflesh, though he’s been releasing enigmatic music under various guises (including the nihilistic hip-hop of Techno Animal) for more than two decades, first gaining notoriety as a drummer for Napalm Death.

 Jesu: Jesu Aversion.com Review
Despite Broadrick’s nods toward melody that wrestles with the outright din of Jesu, this album is undeniably stark, heavy and oppressive.
Jesu isn’t the sort of album you’ll sleep through.
Jesu finds a balance between the overwhelmingly dense soundscapes and cunningly delicate melodies that give the band depth and intrigue that four-on-the-floor howlers never could achieve.

I've only experienced Jesu on headphones but I would be curious as to what sort of hallucinations it might invoke if you were to listen to this within a theatre room.
After listening to the two songs, "Heartache" and "Ruined" you can really hear how the self-titled album came to be.
It's one of those albums that doesn't get in the way of thinking because of its droney, sludgey sound.

I'd say this is easily the best cd of the year for me. Perhaps better than any Godflesh album.
For me, that moment is the album’s climax and unfortunately, in spite of serving as an apt conclusion, the cluster known as “Guardian Angel” bears the brunt of following an outstanding track.
This album amazed me. A friend who was into godflesh turned me onto it.

In the Jesu, meine Freude, you’ve got E-minor, which is your basic mode of the piece; but also there’s a strong element of a C-Major/minor mode in it, which is there.
Schlanger: Well, why don’t we get a concrete example of that by listening to the opening of the Jesu, meine Freude, and the idea that was there from Bach, which we—ll discuss after we hear this; and then, how you worked with the chorus.
What I wanted to just point out, in the opening, is, that the piece, although it might not be obvious to you when you listen to it at first, the piece, even the opening, is highly ironical.

Schiller Institute - Bach's Jesu Meine freude
Now, if you've ever heard that process, it's pretty bad: Because choral music, which is the essence of all competent music, is the singer of one part, hearing his or her voice within the performance of all of the parts.
It was a simple hymn, which Bach used, as he did many other things, as part of the process of creating music, a principle of music.
And that is what you see reflected in the transformation of a simple Lutheran hymn, Jesu meine Freude, into a motet, which expresses, in fact, what you heard—expresses all of the potentialities of Classical musical composition and performance—all of it.

 Jesu: Jesu: Pitchfork Review
Jesu's eight tracks sound so uniformly thick-- and issue such an inexorable grind-- that it's easy to slip-slide inside the sludge and drown.
Founded on poky dynamics, densely crunchy instrumentation and often surprising electronic accents and submerged melodies, throughout the record, Broadrick continually exhibits the most disciplined, slowdive patience before implanting a metallic backbone.
Though I don't act like it, I want to live to 100, and to do so I likely shouldn't carry around adolescent detritus ad infinitum.

Live Review: Kill the Thrill / Jesu / Isis
Since the late 80's, Broadrick had been churning out oppressively monotonous and harsh albums with Godflesh, which came to an end soon after his sidekick GC Green quit the band in 2001.
Kill the Thrill did conjure up quite a wall of sound for an opening band (with the drums very prominent), but somehow they didn't manage to grasp my attention for very long, making me wonder whether it's a good idea to check out their fourth album, which will be released this month.
Since then, he has been focusing himself on Jesu, a band that proves he's still the King of Monotony.

Unlike in Der Geist or Ich lasse Dich nicht, the listener does not see or hear the two choirs as completely separate entities in Komm, Jesu, komm.

But in combination with the other two, we get to see how many various possibilities this scoring allowed, for different textures and characters in the music.

I have pitched the work in D major: this is less of a strain for the sopranos, who no longer have to sustain frequent top As and struggle with a generally unkind tessitura.
