Big on Broadway / Famed composer Jerry Herman spreads show-tune gospel
Herman finds the lyrics in contemporary pop songs "appalling" and doesn't think much more highly of contemporary art musicals.
But Herman, who grew up believing that songwriting was too much fun to be a career (he studied to be an architect or designer), has always been an accidental hitmaker.
His "Jerry's Girls" anthology was a hit in the 1980s, and he followed that with "Tune the Grand Up" in the '90s.

So it is not surprising that, although seemingly retired from the musical comedy stage, he remains the best proponent of the "diva musical," described by theater historian John Clum as a musical comedy "about a woman's escape from the humdrum" and pedestrian life to which social convention would consign her.
First, there is what Herman himself calls the "statement song" in which the heroine delivers her philosophy of life.
His family ran a summer camp where Herman worked until he was 21, in the process discovering a talent for producing musical entertainments.

Without composer Herman ever having intended it, many of his songs can dovetail into one another, giving the appearance of a continuous narrative, although the first act is smoother than the second.
Jerry's Girls is a first-time directing effort from Frederick Willard, previously known as a musical director.
When it opened in 1985 Jerry's Girls was an "and-then-he-wrote" tribute to the composer's most characteristic music, both the hits and the unjustly overlooked.

In Brief: "An Evening With Jerry Herman"
Herman's music and words are not just lovely; they're also lovable.
But never mind: The songs, and Jerry Herman's engaging pianism and commentary, are quite enough to provide a mirthful, and sometimes eye-moistening, happy time.
Back in 1974, I was the only critic who recognized it as such: a work infused with existential insight and enrapturing melody and lyrics.

His ardent, erudite discussions of Herman's music and lyrics reveal oft-unacknowledged depth, wit, and artistic order in fluffy hits and lead-footed flops alike, but sometimes he seems overly partisan, blaming everyone but Herman for failures and noting every initial box-office stiff that is, thanks to a little tweaking, perky in its after-Broadway life.

This effusive praise extends to Herman’s musicals: Mame is "foolproof" and "one of the finest musicals of the sixties," while a ballad from Mack and Mabel is "in the top echelon of dramatic art." Citron obviously admires Herman and his oeuvre; in his acknowledgements, he writes "Herman is that rare subject, a joy for a biographer, possessed of total recall and never too busy to answer a question.

Stage Preview: Broadway's Jerry Herman still feels wonderful
As an undergraduate at University of Miami (Florida), composer-lyricist Jerry Herman wrote and directed a musical revue, "I Feel Wonderful." It was the perfect title for Herman, now 72, whose talk is still peppered with cheery adjectives like "wonderful" and "lovely."
There's also a book just out, "Jerry Herman: The Lyrics," co-edited by Ken Bloom, with just about all his lyrics including some never before published.
That revue went right on to a 1952 Off-Broadway run, starting the effusive Herman on a career that resulted in two perennial standards, "Hello, Dolly!" (1964) and "Mame" (1966), along with "Milk and Honey" (1961), "Dear World" (1969), "Mack and Mabel"(1974), "The Grand Tour" (1979), "La Cage aux Folles" (1983) and TV's "Mrs.

This sparkling jewel of a review is infused with the qualities of Jerry Herman's music: his insightful humanity, unshakable belief in love and unquenchable optimism all enveloped in genuine warmth which transcends, if only momentarily, the soulless chill of the world outside.
In fact, the depth of Herman's lyrics leave you thinking you saw a whole play.
The few lesser notes were the use of a man in drag for "A Little More Mascara" because it was done exactly the same way that it is performed in La Cage Aux Folles---dressing room mirror and robe, and it can only recall George Hearn's brilliant performance.

The result is a lively discourse blending previously unpublished lyrics with production photos and a special cd of Michael Feinstein performing Herman's favorite songs.
