Commentary Magazine - Jerome Kern and American Operetta
...Kern was essentially a melodic-lyric composer, and as such he relegated all dramatic expression to minor musical passages, i.e., to the "verses" of his songs or to the lighter comedy numbers...
...Kern's music with its languid, perfumed melodiousness, and his librettos with their interesting heroines, might be said to result in part from his background...
...AT THE moment, Jerome Kern seems destined to be remembered as a primal source of tuneful ballads for the All-Time Hit Parade-indeed, this is his role in Hollywood's technicolor canonization of the composer, When the Clouds Roll By...

The centennial of Kern's birth was celebrated in 1985, which saw the issuing of a U.S. Postage stamp in his honor, as well as the release of more recordings and performances of his music.
Kern enrolled in the New York College of Music in 1902 and in 1903 went abroad to study music in Germany.
Kern wrote his most important work, "Show Boat," in 1927 with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II.

 Jerome Kern
Byron, who, according to Ira Gershwin, & the ultimate answer to a lyric writer’s prayers”, was engaged in preparing an album of neglected Kern songs when he discovered the melodies.
A new Kern song, like a new Hemingway novel, is, at least in the field of aesthetics and ruthlessness, news of a stop-presses nature.
In collaboration with P.G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton Kern created a series of shows – called the Princess shows, after the theatre in which the majority were mounted - featuring charming melodies combined with witty books and lyrics.

 MSN Encarta - Jerome Kern
Kern was remarkably adept at infusing his music with the flavor of the dramatic situations and the lyrics for which he composed.
Kern composed the music for many popular films, including Men of the Sky (1930), Swing Time (1936), High, Wide, and Handsome (1937), You Were Never Lovelier (1942), and Can't Help Singing (1945).
During the next 20 years Kern achieved numerous successes composing for the Broadway stage.

Today, Jerome Kern is widely recognized as one of the most creative and imaginative composers of musical comedies for the stage and theater.
Indeed, Jerome Kern wrote the melodies for songs America still loves to sing.
However, Kern's greatest achievement was his unforgettable musical score for the 1927 Folk Opera Showboat, which became one of America's best loved musical comedies.

Jerome David Kern Biography / Biography of Jerome David Kern Biography Biography
Jerome David Kern (1885-1945), American composer, wrote the scores for several of the musical theater's greatest successes.
In the realm of serious music, Kern composed Portrait for Orchestra (Mark Twain), which had its world premiere in 1942 by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Montage for Orchestral Suite for full orchestra and two pianos.
One of its songs, "Ol' Man River," is perhaps Kern's most famous.

 A Composer's and Lyricists Database - 'K' Biographies continued.
In 1919, Kern had a minor hit with the song "Ka-Lu-A", with lyric by Anne Caldwell.
While in 1933, Kern had a hit with the song "Roberta", (lyric: Otto Harbach) which was heard in both the Broadway show and Hollywood film "Gowns By Roberta".
During 1913, Kern and other composers and lyricists were experimenting, in the small Princess Theater in New York, with American subjects for musicals.

 Biography for Jerome Kern
Kern, however, did not experiment any further--his other hit shows, "Music In The Air", "Roberta& Cat and the Fiddle", contain classic songs that are still sung, but the shows are almost never revived.
Finally, looking for an entirely different type of musical, Kern decided to adapt Edna Ferber's novel "Show Boat&; to the musical stage.
Although Oscar Hammerstein II agreed to do the adaptation and lyrics, nearly everyone (including Ferber) thought Kern and Hammerstein had lost their minds.

 Jerome Kern
In his early teens Kern went to Germany to study at a music conservatory, After which he returned to New York to work at various jobs in the music industry, as a song plugger and a rehersal pianist, and at the age of 17 he had his first song published!
Although not an overwhelming success, it was well recieved and the first of the "Princess Theatre Musicals." The Princess Theatre was a tiny theatre (seating 299) and a string of musicals written for the theatre were little, intimate, well integrated musicals.
The next in the string was Very Good Eddie, which was a smash hit, and after that sucess Bolton and Kern were joined by P.G. Wodehouse, who helped by taking over the lyrics while Bolton concentrated on the book for subsequent (popular) musicals.

 Songwriters Hall of Fame
In 1927, Kern teamed with Oscar Hammerstein II and the two adapted Edna Ferber's novel into one of the greatest of all American musicals: Show Boat.
In the years following Show Boat, Kern continued to write for Broadway, producing such classic songs as "The Song Is You" (from Music in the Air, 1932, with Oscar Hammerstein II), "Let's Begin," "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "Yesterdays" (all from Roberta, 1933 with lyrics by Otto Harbach).
Back in Hollywood, for a film called You Were Never Lovelier in 1942, Kern wrote the classic "I'm Old Fashioned" with a lyric by Johnny Mercer.

The Oscar was given for his song, 'The Way You Look Tonight'.
After several years of writing songs which enhanced the scores of European musical imports, Kern joined forces with an Englishman, Guy Bolton.
Consequently, he was allowed to study at the New York College of Music.

 Class Act: Composers: "K"
Jerome Kern is one of my all-time favorite composers of popular music.
As Judy Garland states in her spoken tribute, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I hope you'll forgive my becoming somewhat lyrical, but I believe the man of whom I'm going to speak and to whom Paul Whiteman, Les Paul, the Trio, Paul Whiteman's Orchestra and Chorus and yours truly pay tribute is worthy of lyrical praise.
While working on MGM's tribute to his music, Till the Clouds Roll By, Kern died on November 11, 1945 of a cerebral thrombosis.

About Jerome Kern - PNB's Silver Lining
Kern's early writing experience followed the practice of the day, with Kern being one of three or four composers who contributed music to a score.
Summing up Kern's great significance, Mast writes: "Kern brought nineteenth-century European musical grace, complexity, construction, and taste to twentieth-century American song, musical theater, and musical films....
According to Mast, "It was the first American musical to tackle an explicitly serious social subject without reducing it to embarrassing claptrap."

Playbill News: The Song Is Him: Jerome Kern Lives Again in Score of Broadway's Never Gonna Dance
With Show Boat, Kern began a series of works for the stage which were more operatic and involved the close interweaving of music, song and speech, including Sweet Adeline (1929), The Cat and the Fiddle (1931), Music in the Air (1932) and Roberta (1933).
A new generation of theatregoers will be introduced to the richness and variety of the songs of composer Jerome Kern this fall when Never Gonna Dance, a new musical inspired by the RKO picture "Swing Time" dances onto Broadway.
Between 1915 and 1919, he composed a series of intimate chamber musicals, mostly in collaboration with Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, known as the Princess Theatre shows.

 Who's Who in Musicals: I To K
Kern continued to turn out musical comedy hits through the next decade, including the Marilyn Miller vehicles Sally (1920) &; with "Look for the Silver Lining" – and Sunny (1925).
A Tin Pan Alley song-plugger and Broadway rehearsal pianist, Kern's early songs found their way into imported British musicals in need of a musical boost.
One of Jones' last shows for Edwardes was The Girl From Utah (1913), a mediocre show which is primarily remembered because its 1916 Broadway production added the song which brought fame to composer Jerome Kern – "They Didn't Believe Me." As of 1916, Jones stopped composing, opting for a prolonged retirement.

 Jerome Kern
Show Boat was the first Broadway musical to be written that showed the importance of writing songs that were an integral part of the play& story line, rather than simply using musical theatre as another venue for hit Tin Pan Alley songs.
The musical audiences everywhere in many forms got to see different productions of Kerns work.
Jerome Kern was involved in music from a very young age.

 Jerome Kern in Cedar Knolls
Despite all the changes in musical fashions in the almost fifty years since his death, the countless beautiful melodies Jerome Kern created live on.
In the big library with its two pianos, or in his tower studio over the barn, the author composed such well–loved melodies as Old Man River, Who?, and Look for the Silver Lining.
Sensitive to nature, one of Kern’s hit songs was suggested to him by a bird whose chirping aroused his interest one night, but whose notes he could not remember next day.
