Jeff Buckley on the album cover of Grace
Jeff Buckley drowned in the Wolf River, a tributary of the Mississipi River, in Memphis, Tennessee on May 29, 1997, the evening his band came to Memphis to start recording for his second album, which was to be called My Sweetheart the Drunk.
In 1994, Buckley released his debut album Grace, composed of ten tracks.

 Splendid E-zine reviews: Jeff Buckley
Buckley and his band would stretch the live songs to allow room for new vocal interpretations and musical interplay; they were never radically different from their studio versions, but no song was ever performed the same way live.
For the listener, this album is a prize.
For the Estate, this album should be a completion of Buckley's contract with Columbia, freeing up Guibert to release more albums on her own if she follows through with her oft stated plans.

Salon Entertainment Music Feature: Jeff Buckley
But Buckley was dissatisfied with the Verlaine-produced tracks.
Buckley's first studio album, "Grace," was a ponderous redoing of "Houses of the Holy." Buckley's songs didn't even have melodies.
Buckley left only this album, but surely it is as valuable as an aorta.

 Jeff Buckley - Biography
Buckley conducted an extensive interview with Nusrat in Interview magazine (January 1996) and wrote the liner notes for the singer's The Supreme Collection album which was released on Mercator/Caroline Records in August 1997.
But it would have been a defeat Jeff Buckley could never have lived with and so he went on, taking a very long time to write his second album, which he was finally just about to go into the studio and record.
An ardent enthusiast for a myriad of musical forms, Jeff Buckley was an early champion among young American musicians for the work of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the world's foremost Qawwali (the music of the Sufis) singer.

 Jeff Buckley Tribute
Buckley emerged in the mid-90 s as one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of his generation: a remarkable feat considering it was achieved on the basis of just one album - and that everyone was comparing him to his late father, Tim, himself one of the most creative talents of the 60s.
With the release of his debut album ``Grace, Jeff Buckley emerged from the shadow of his late musician-father, TIM BUCKLEY, a popular performer during the 1960 s and early 70 s who died from a drug overdose in 1975 at the age of 28.
If you listen to the Jeff Buckley " Grace CD" and the folk-rock LP "Goodbye and Hello" from Tim, you know what a great loss the Buckleys are to popular music.

 A Chanteuse with a Penis
Jeff covered several of her songs, among them an English version of Hymne à l'Amour, a song which Piaf wrote and performed in memory of her dead lover, boxer Marcel Cerdan.
Jeff Buckley once called himself - perhaps with some sense of irony - a "chanteuse with a penis." He never shrank from the feminine side of his nature, interpreting songs by some of music's most illustrious female torch singers.
Jeff said he learned a great deal from listening to Judy's interpretation of songs.

Tim Buckley was a folk singer from LA who like many others, did not live to see the full extent of his impact on music.
Jeff Buckley was the son of legendary folk singer Tim Buckley.
Tim Buckley was launched from the underground music scene, and his first two albums (1967's "Goodbye and Hello" and 1968's "Happy Sad") had a traditional folk style - with some twists.

Jeff Buckley: Grace: Legacy Edition: Pitchfork Review
In Buckley's case, it was a steady stream of collaborators, girls, gigs and an impressive reserve of torch songs from way back when.
Lucas and Buckley established a partnership that produced some very good songs (including "Mojo Pin" and Grace's title track) in a very short time, but before they had a chance to make it out of the city, Buckley quit the band over a disagreement regarding his future loyalty.
He really wasn't built for the strand of rock music borne of rebellion or release; he was a songbird, like the kind that used to receive roses and blown kisses from the debutantes in the balcony after performances.

Buckley is a big fan of the Pakistani singer and launched into a monologue about his hero, as well as a generous sampling of Nusrat's music.
Buckley was signed by Sony, which will release an EP, Live at Sin-é in mid-November, followed by a full album next year.
Jeff has produced the album together with Andy Wallace and he plays with his own, new accompanying band, consisting of Michael Tighe (guitar), Mick Grondahl (bass) and Matt Johnson (not the guy from The The, drums).

Bolstered by a full band, Buckley has room to explore his heavier and more complicated musical influences.
Still, for most critics, the true beauty of this album is embodied in Buckley's moody, solitary, and sweet rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." Although Jeff's gone now, this album stands as a powerful and enduring legacy to his talent as a performer.
The lead track "Mojo Pin," for example, begins with Buckley floating his supple falsetto over an instrumentally sparse space that crescendos in a Zeppelin-tinged torrent of driving staccato drumming, pulsing guitars, and wailing operatic vocals.

As Jeff described it in an interview, "Hallelujah" is a song about the primitive emotions of love and sex, the almighty orgasm.
Although, "Last Goodbye" was the single released by Sony from Buckley's debut album Grace, I have always felt "Lover You Should've Come Over" showcased Buckley's songwriting and musical talent most truly.
