Jazz rap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jazz rap is a fusion of alternative hip hop music and jazz, developed in the very late 1980s and early 1990s.
Though some claim the proto-hip hop, jazzy poet Gil Scott-Heron the beginning of jazz rap, the genre arose in 1988 with the release of the debut singles by Gang Starr ("Words I Manifest", which samples Charlie Parker) and Stetsasonic ("Talkin' All That Jazz", which samples Lonnie Liston-Smith).
Known for intellectual, often socio-political or Afrocentric lyrics and jazz beats (sometimes performed by a live band, instead of sampled), jazz rap has not become a huge mainstream success; it instead sells primarily to a small specialized fan base.

AllRefer.com - rap music (Music: Popular And Jazz) - Encyclopedia
The word rap, derived from a 1960s slang word for conversation, generally consists of chanted, often improvised, street poetry accompanied by a montage of well-known recordings, usually disco or funk.
rap music or hip-hop, genre originating in the mid-1970s among black and Hispanic performers in New York City, at first associated with an athletic style of dancing, known as breakdancing.
Rap has influenced many forms of popular culture, particularly film, and has been increasingly incorporated into pop music.

Jazz came out during the peak of punk, and showed that Queen had lost none of the pomp and bombast of their early days.
Overall, it is still an enjoyable album to listen to, but you will find you need to use the skip button on your cd player a few times.
However, songs like more of that jazz, fun it, mustapha, etc are songs which just lack that extra ingredient that queen seem to find so often.

CD Baby: G-3 RAP: Inner City Groove
The underlying theme of this album is that a birth of a new music style is in order.
G-3 Rap is original music with old school flavor.
I listen to it quite often to and from work, my favorite song is "Like Dat (remix)".

PopMatters Columns Will Layman Jazz Today Hip-Hop Hybrid, Jazz's Holy Grail
Jazz is largely obsessed with song structure and referencing (or consciously breaking from) tradition, while hip-hop fetishizes an opposite sensibility.
This disc (later subject to a hometown remix project) succeeded not as a streeter-than-thou jazz record or a smartypants rap CD but on it's own terms, as a pairing of a hip-hop drenched rhythm team laying down live tracks for improvisers who are not afraid to make daring harmonic choices.
It wasn't a hybrid of jazz and hip-hop, but it showed what would later be required to create one: a deep understanding of the other music rather than a desire to profit from a superficial dabbling.

the JAZZ LOUNGE - RAP ARTISTS
As the first white rap group of any importance, the Beastie Boys received the scorn of critics and strident hip-hop musicians, who accused them of cultural pirating, especially since they began as a hardcore punk group in 1981.
But the Beasties weren't pirating -- they treated rap as part of a post-punk musical underground, where the do-it-yourself aesthetics of hip-hop and punk weren't that far apart.
That album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, hit the Top 20 in 1994 and was certified platinum by the end of the year.

 Warsaw Voice - Jazz Rap
In the rest of the album a fascination with rap is clearly perceivable.
The music composed for Krzysztof Krauze's film Dług has a special place on the album, as it won the Gdynia Film Festival Award, and draws attention to the fact that Urbaniak has composed film and theater music for many years.
The album begins with a "family" production, "Millennium," for which Urbaniak's daughter, Mika, raps and Urszula Dudziak sings.

Madlib refuses to wear blinkers, his music is influenced heavily by reggae, jazz, his sampling and flow by dance music.
There's rap about opression, jazz musicians, record digging, weed, and even the color green.
As opposed to top-40 over produced rap, this album gives the impression of two guys, spinnin' and rappin' in a basement in an incredibly thick haze of weed.

 Us3 Hand On The Torch
While it's true that this album, presented by Us3, is rap music with a strong beat, a chip on its shoulder, and by design suited primarily for strenuous dancing, there is an artistic quality in the music that cannot be overlooked.
The rap lyrics of “I Go To Work” offer a theme similar to that of the other tunes: despite growing up in a rough neighborhood and facing many obstacles, we are able, with a hardened attitude, to do the right thing after all.
As rap artist Kobie Powell delivers the message, guitarist Tony Remy offers a fine solo in the mode of Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, and any number of leading jazz guitarists.

The jazz connection on these songs is minimal at best, but the well-produced tracks and Davenport's sultry voice are compelling on their own merits.
By the close of the album, those tracks are what the listener remembers, not the lightweight grooves.
In black neighborhoods of New York and Philadelphia, Nubian's debut album, One for All, was actually a bigger seller than many of the platinum gangsta rap releases outselling it on a national level.

His rapping style began to sound old by the mid 1980's, and while Blow has not released an album since 1988, he has been active in hiphop, hosting a radio show in Los Angeles and writing extensive liner notes for Rhino Records' "The History of Rap" box set.
They brag about their rap ability and sexual power; can be see as forerunners of ghetto-tech, except they do not use the heavy bass sounds associated with ghetto-tech.
His side, "Love Rap," was a hit and earned him a reputation as "the love rapper." He recorded several other popular records with other groups (including a collaboration with all-female group Sequence) before dropping out of the music business in the late 1980's.

 CD review: "doo-bop"
Perhaps jazz should revert to its big band roots and become, once again, the dance music of a generation.
If our choices in jazz are, and lately they have seemed to be, the brilliant but timeworn playing of the neo-traditionalists or the shallow pseudo-jazz pop sounds of charlatans such as Kenny G, Spyro Gyra and David Sanborn, then jazz needs every infusion of originality and daring it can get.
By not only associating his name with rap, but producing a stellar album of vision and taste, Miles will bring mainstream critical attention to a music form too often defined in terms of its most crass and base practitioners.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Do You Want More?!!!??! [PA] - The Roots (Rap) at Epinions.com
On this song, Black Thought raps some basic lyrics in a musical call and response type of format, then intersperses them with some vocal improvisations that imitate the instrument that’s supposed to respond in that stanza.
While other rappers throw on a DAT (digital audio tape) and just move around the stage doing their songs, The Roots put on more of a performance than a show, accentuating the musical skill of each member.
It’s hard to describe, but if you listen to rap frequently, odds are you’ve heard it somewhere before.

Amazon.com: Music: In Full Gear [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]
As summarized in the sublime "Talking All That Jazz," the album was meant to be a musical manifesto of all of the directions late-'80s hip-hop was expanding toward: revolutionary spoken word, JBs tributes, soul jazz, go-go, R&B, dancehall, turntablism, instrumental hip-hop, rap rock, even Miami bass.

Amazon.com: Music: Antipop Consortium vs. Matthew Shipp
They redefine both hip-hop and jazz by pushing boundaries; Antipop frees hip-hop from its standard 4/4 breakbeat traditions, and Shipp combines his free-jazz roots with a new, tighter sensibility, emphasizing the groove.
I highly recommend this CD to Fans of Rap/Hip-Hop and Jazz to realize that there is something "Powerful" and "Positive" that can come out of creating Music from the "Soul".
By the latter third of the album, the Anti-pop MCs get their rap groove back--somewhat.

 Jazz-Rap - Wikipedia

They use the requisite James Brown samples (on "Gotch U" and "Manifest") but add jazz piano and upright bass over smooth rap lyrics.
While Public Enemy and the Ultramagnetic MCs were bringing the noise, the duo of Guru and DJ Premier were enrolling for jazz classes under the name Gang Starr.
It also works because DJ Premier is a force to be reckoned with (the classic DJ cut "DJ Premier in Deep Concentration" name-checks hip-hop contemporaries like Rakim, scratched out over the sweet piano of Kool and the Gang's "Summertime").
