Jazz - encyclopedia article about Jazz.
Jazz, the 1978 record album by Ry Cooder.
Early jazz influences found their first mainstream expression in the marching band and dance band music of the day, which was the standard form of popular concert music at the turn of century.
At the root of jazz is the blues, the folk music of former African slaves in the U.S. South and their descendants, heavily influenced by West African cultural and musical traditions, that evolved as black musicians migrated to the cities.

 Jazz
Three characteristics have distinguished jazz throughout its history: (1) improvisation; (2) a distinctive rhythmic approach known as swing; and (3) an expectation that each jazz musician should attain a unique, individual sound through his or her distinctive improvisational approach to harmony, melody, and rhythm, and often through intentional variations or distortions of tone and timbre.
The attempt to combine jazz and classical music came to be termed third-stream music, partly on the basis of the MJQ's album Third Stream Music (1960).
Successive jazz styles-including New Orleans, swing, bebop, cool, hard bop, free jazz, jazz-rock, and neotraditionalism-have, to a considerable extent, reflected an increase in musical complexity, both in the playing of individual soloists and in the work of composers and arrangers.

The World of Jazz - Larousse Encyclopedia of Music
All jazz is syncopated music, but not all syncopated music is jazz.
Jazz is based on the principles of improvisation on a given harmonic base.
From here on jazz was to be a musician's music, its harmonic conventions so convoluted that it became increasingly difficult for the untrained ear to distinguish the justified neologism from the unjustified solecism.

 How Jazz Musicians Practice
Jazz pianists practice a variety of scales and modes.
Jazz is essentially an aural tradition as echoed in the phrase "the records are the textbooks." The extensive texts, methods, transcriptions, and resources on all aspects of how to play jazz are a relatively recent phenomenon.
In addition to "traditional" pianistic skills, jazz pianists must also be able to improvise, harmonize melodies, instantly transpose, and create accompaniments in a variety of styles.
