 Jazz History - Jazz Fusion
"Fusion" has often been described as the melding of jazz with rock styles, although most fusion music initially drew from the rhythmic and harmonic aspects of soul music, particularly the music of James Brown and Sly Stone.
Miles's earliest experiment with fusion was documented on his 1968 recording Miles In The Sky, with the song "Stuff." Featuring Herbie Hancock on electric piano and Tony Williams playing a funky back beat, "Stuff" illustrated the genesis of this musical style.
Such harmonic material found in soul music was also similar to the modal improvisation developed by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and John Coltrane in the late 1950s and '60s.

To me, fusion is jazz mixed with rock, that is to say jazz played on electric instruments, perferably with electric guitar being the lead voice since a too-loud distorted guitar is what people associate with rock music.
Fusion's original definition was best: a mixture of jazz improvisation with the power and rhythms of rock, however it may also include a mixture of virtually any style mixed with Jazz including: funk, blues, rock, hip-hop, folk, eastern, African, Cuban, avant-garde, classical, and virtually anything else available to borrow from.
What distinguishes fusion from jazz is the electric element, jazz is played on acoustic instruments.

 Ken Burns JAZZ On Fusion
As fusion progresses, we see that the musicians desire is not to come up with a jazz sensibility and use things from rock and roll, but it’s to just become a glorified pop musician who can play instrumental music also.
And I think the problem with a lot of the fusion music is that it's extremely predictable, it's a rock rhythm and the solos all play, the soloists all play the same stuff and they play it over and over again and there's a certain musical virtuosity involved in it.
Then, that was the first music of jazz that was not horn-based.
