Pankow is referring to 1974, however, when the band only had a catalogue of six studio albums to draw from.
I don't care where we are, when it is — that song has to be the closer of the show because that rock 'n' roll anthem from this band.
Meanwhile Pankow and the Chicago members were able to reaffirm their brassy heritage on the 1995 Night and Day album, featuring standards by Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and other Big Band composers, given the modern Chicago treatment.

 Chicago
In 1967, Chicago musicians Robert Lamm, James Pankow, Walter Parazaider, Lee Loughnane, Terry Kath, Peter Cetera, and Danny Seraphine formed a group with one dream, to integrate all the musical diversity from their beloved city and weave a new sound, rock 'n' roll band with horns.
When Chicago gathered at the Caribou Ranch to record its seventh album in the fall of 1973, the initial intention was to do a jazz album.
Kath, Pankow, and especially Lamm were writing large amounts of original material, with Lamm completing two of the group's most memorable songs, "Questions 67 and 68" and "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" just prior to the departure from Chicago.

 Chicago - Performing Songwriter
With the 1990s came the disenfranchised Chicago, recording under the sway of various other producers and outside songwriters such as Diane Warren, surrendering control to music industry “suits” with fixed ideas on how to keep the band relevant.
It could come from their current album, Chicago XXVI, a live set featuring three previously unreleased studio tracks.
“Their input has definitely broadened the horizon and the scope of how we look at music,” says Pankow.

 Chicago VI - Psychology Central
After recording all of Chicago's first five albums in New York City, producer James William Guercio had his own Caribou Studios built in Nederland, Colorado during 1972, finished in time for the band to record their sixth album the following February.
Following the streamlined character of Chicago V, this successor would see the group follow more of a pop music approach, relying less on their trademark horns and exploring varied music forms.
It would remain their recording base for the next four years.

 Chicago (band) @ Famous.y2u.co.uk
The centerpiece track was a 15-minute suite composed by James Pankow called "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" (the structure of this suite was inspired by Pankow's love for classical music).
That same year, they attempted to merge their unique sound with Big Band music for the album Night and Day: Big Band, which consisted of covers of songs originally recorded by Sarah Vaughan, Glenn Miller, and Duke Ellington (from whom the album mainly got its inspiration).
Upon release of their first record in early 1969, the band took a new name, Chicago Transit Authority (the band's name was shortened to simply Chicago soon after the album's release when the "real" Chicago Transit Authority threatened legal action).

This incarnation of the band produced 2 studio albums, '18' and '19' and a greatest hits album, called 'Chicago 20: Greatest Hits 1982-1989'.

This more melodic and introverted sensibility pervades the rest of the disc as well -- especially from Robert Lamm (keyboard/vocals), who is particularly prolific, penning half of the material on the disc.
This is reflected in the succinct pop and light rock efforts, contrasting the earlier lengthy and multi-movement epics that filled their earlier works.
Nowhere is this more evident than on Chicago VI's (1973) two Top Ten singles: the easygoing James Pankow (trombone) ballad "Just You & Me" as well as the up-tempo rocker "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," which Pankow co-wrote with Peter Cetera (vocal/bass).
