 Arborescence
I envisioned the JamBand subculture symbolizing arborescence because all of the bands involved in the music subculture are connected through a passion for improvisation and live performance.
JamBands are influenced by a wide range of musical styles/genres including (but not limited to): rock, jazz, bluegrass, electronic, funk, and caribbean.
In the Ozric Tentacles album, they hint that their arborescence is their music branching out and engulfing the listener.

PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY KEITH "MUZIKMAN" HANNALECK
The most important issue that I have realized about jamband music is its ability to crossover to different musical influences without missing a beat along the way.
I am finding that jamband music is becoming more and more appealing to me because of its similarity in complexity to progressive rock; In fact, I think that they are close cousins relatively speaking when you are comparing and contrasting genres.
After listening to this CD I can see how that apprenticeship helped them to polish their sound and then create their own original tunes mirroring that great band.

 BoiseWeekly: Noise: Noise: Jambands
As the stylistic margin of a jamband is vast, it's hardly a stretch for band members to be influenced by a variety of sources.
Perhaps the other most common characteristic a band is measured against for its "jammy" quotient is the extent groupies remain present throughout the length of a tour.
That universal "vibe" is relevant for all musicians whether categorically a jamband or not, including the String Cheese Incident (at the Big Easy April 1 to a sold-out crowd) and Boise's Crash Four, who have developed a respectable following as well (at Tom Grainey's April 2).

JamBase B.B. KING FINDS NEW LIFE IN JAM WORLD
Live concerts are the lynch-pin of the jamband universe, and fans demonstrate an insatiable appetite for the live experience, many hitting the road for weeks at a time to follow their favorite band, only to return home to trade the latest concert recordings and engage in lengthy online discussions of the band's performances.
Because many jambands encourage live concert recording and trading, their actual studio album sales are modest, but record sales do not accurately reflect the actual fan-base of most jambands.
Sure, jambands aren’t known for selling a lot of records, but the grass roots networks that form around them, both online and at their concerts, have clearly gotten the attention of the music industry, and may suggest an alternative music business model for the post-Napster generation.

 JAM ‘TIL DAWN*
Jambands are insuring that they’ll maintain interested participants by continuously throwing musical surprises at their audiences.
The jamband family has grown dramatically since the earliest years of improvisational music.
Tours are being built around this camaraderie, and the jamband scene continues to do more than flourish, it is gaining mainstream acceptance as a growing and respected musical community.

 Steve Kimock (p.2)
There's a different level of gravity between the idea of players or an audience talking about being a jamband, and a serious musician of your caliber talking about small band improvisation.
You know, one of those bands is clearly a rock band.
Let's talk about where you think your music is coming from, and what tradition you're carrying on, so to speak.

Particle & DJ Harry: Aladdin Theater, Portland, OR - 11/19/2004
As we all know by now, the term “jamband” has as much to do with the improvisational nature of a band’s music and the scene surrounding that band’s live concerts as it does with any specific type of music.
If I had to pick one band on the scene today though whose sound epitomizes the jamband sound, if there is such a thing, I would be hard pressed not to choose Particle.
Admittedly, this was my first Particle concert experience, and really the only significant encounter these ears have had with the band’s energetic sound.

village voice > news > Jammed for All Time by Robin A. Rothman
But as it turns out, so-called jambands, a gaggle of related giggers not typically labeled as such, and the loyal audience that lumps them together collectively form the most pervasive underground movement in music today.
This three-day music and camping event held last June in Tennessee was not only the most high-profile multi-band concert the jamband scene has ever staged, it was the largest American music festival of the summer.
Among the diversions at Bonnaroo was a Music Sharing Village, where almost 6000 attendees created and burned free, personalized live-music compilations culled from tracks, sets, and entire concerts supplied by the bands.

 [No title]
The theory that the jamband phenom was born out of the demise of the Dead and the semiretirement of Phish works for some, but Budnick emphasizes that the scene is largely made up of kids too young to have seen these bands.
'Jamband' defines the type of listener more than it does the type of band.
These bands are sort of cross-realm: They weren't quite funk bands, they weren't quite jazz bands, they weren't quite folk, Latin or rock.

New York Daily News - Entertainment - Jamband: Grooves without frontiers
Which is why Baby Boomers who thrill to the Meters and the Grateful Dead - respectively, the 2001 and 2002 Jammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners - perceive jamband music as a new bottle for a variety of old vintages.
"But as with today's jambands, it would denote an approach to music rather than a genre.
Improvisational music can take the band and audience on an unforeseen journey where a sort of mass communication takes place.

 Umphrey’s McGee: Anchor’s Away
Umphrey’s McGee belongs to the jambands, whereas the Dave Matthew’s Band, well…whatever.
And indeed, while music fans and journalists and publicists and record labels are all still trying to figure out what it means to be a jamband exactly, Bayliss is still trying to figure out what it means to be in one.
The setlist includes an unusual amount of rarities and any concern that Umphrey’s McGee is no longer a jamband is put to rest by their incessant improvisation.

Since the jamband realm is marked by its denizens' propensity for bridging genres, A440's "alternative improvisational groove" was inevitable.
I was troubled by the first version's compilation of press photos with prose that read like official bios, with few details about actual album releases, and with an unswerving politeness throughout about all of the acts included.

CD Baby: CHARITY KAHN: Charity and the JAMband: Peanut Butter and JAM
'Charity and the JAMband: Peanut Butter and JAM' is the mind-blowing follow-up to the first JAM CD, Music for Movement with Children.
The funky/folky JAMband joins in with Charlie Crocker (Daddy Charlie) on bass, Amos Glick (Uncle Mo) on guitar, and Hud Bixler (Daddy Hud) on drums to make this CD truly rock.
Charity Kahn sings and plays the blues away with her versatile voice, expansive harmonies, clever piano licks, and fabulous flute frills.

JamBands.Com - September 1999 - Yellow Submarines and Segues: The Beatles Jamband Legacy
There are many different phases, musical and otherwise, that can come to mind at the mention of the band: in just seven years in the spotlight, there was everything ranging from moptops to psychedelia to, well, Yoko.
They played unvaried sets of short pop tunes during their brief live career, which they quit after 1966, even though they still made recordings until 1969's Abbey Road.
However, none of these are aspects one could directly relate to improvisational music, so what makes them so crucial to the jambands scene?

Las Vegas SUN: Spreading the Jam
"I'm super impressed by the JamBand Society," Uberschall guitarist Elvis Lederer said.
"In past Soundtests, we've tried to do more bands, but the true nature of the JamBand Society is the jam, the improvisation, and that works best when you don't have time constraints.
The group's roster boasts a respected DJ, KUNV 91.5-FM's George Lyons, a JamBand officer who heads its production committee.

They'll understand and even thrive on the idea that they might be playing to 600 people, but the whole world is likely to hear (and critique) the music they are creating.
I just hope we don't burn through an entire generation of jambands before the adjustment is made.
Other than rarities like The Spin Doctors and the Dave Matthews Band, jambands don't grow with the explosion of the big hit single.

Relaxation and beauty are to be found on this album, sided with talented sidemen and an assortment of genres.
In the end, the trip becomes a liberating one, breaking the listener out of the standard mold of jamband electronic excesses.
Sonically, it seems that Janover transcribed this version from the cherished "Live/Dead" cut, complete with preceding rumblings, etc. While not as good as the original, it is nevertheless an amenity.

 NetRhythms: Book reviews
From a musical perspective it's heartening to see that Jambands are apparently blind to genre with jazz, Bluegrass, folk, country and rock in all its many hues cohabiting in all fertilising peace (sometimes, it must be said, within the one long jam!)
The bands have proved that not only can you sell music but you can sell shows and indeed create a festival circuit populated by (no doubt profitable) thousands.
There is, of course, absolutely nothing new about the concept of jambands.
