In a Silent Way - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 2001, Columbia Legacy/Sony Music released The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions, a three-disc box set which included the unedited recordings used to produce the original album, In a Silent Way as originally edited, and additional tracks.
In a Silent Way is a 1969 album by jazz trumpeter Miles Davis.
The album featured virtuoso guitarist and newcomer John McLaughlin, who had one month prior to the February 18th In a Silent Way session recorded his classic debut album Extrapolation.

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way - On Second Thought - Stylus Magazine
The fresh modes of constructing music that it presented revolutionised the jazz community, and the shifting, ethereal beauty of the actual music contained within has remained beautiful and wonderful, its echoes heard through the last 30 years, touching dance music, electronica, rock, pop, all music.
In A Silent Way presented a new kind of music, a music that rose from the ether, drifting and meandering like smoke caught in candlelight.
The music itself though, is far away from the structured beauty of that album.

MILES DAVIS / THE COMPLETE IN A SILENT WAY SESSIONS
The full and unedited In A Silent Way session—40 minutes of music recorded on February 18, 1969—attests to the producing genius of Teo Macero.
While it is fascinating to hear the music in its organic form, it lacks the focus and power of the edited material found on the album.
On the title track, Miles threw away Joe Zawinul's chord sheets, transforming the keyboardist's original melody of "In A Silent Way" into a sublime electric mantra that was overwhelmingly beautiful and fresh.

Miles Davis: The Complete in a Silent Way Sessions - PopMatters Music Review
On In a Silent Way, he used 33 minutes of music to create a 40-minute album, and drew that 33 minutes from a possible 46 that were recorded.
The set highlights many important elements to Davis's evolving sound: that aforementioned quest to strip songs down to their essential parts, his shift from acoustic to electric-based music, his choice of sidemen who best play that type of music, and, in turn, his way of coaxing the best music from those sidemen.
On the new Complete In a Silent Way Sessions box set from Columbia Records -- the label's most recent set in its laudable and voluminous attempt to compartmentalize Davis's long, complex career into more manageable segments --listeners can see the transition from one era to the next.

Miles Davis: In a Silent Way (Deluxe Edition) [Original Recording Remastered] - PopMatters Music Review
In a Silent Way was one such album.
Original liner notes are included on all three albums as well as excellent and informative new essays which give the listener historical perspective and insight.
Miles Davis, though at times musically exclusive, was one of the few jazz artists of the second half of the 20th century who somehow managed to make albums that were both accessible to the masses and appealing to the informed.

Jazzmatazz Review - Miles Davis - The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions
And from failure and discards came an immeasurable achievement—the actualization of "In A Silent Way," one of the most soulful and soft compositions in electrified jazz and one too often overshadowed by its successor album, "Bitches Brew".
The era commenced with the "Filles de Kilimanjaro" recordings where the electric piano was insinuated as a chaste accompanying instrument.
This is a study in creation, and a rewarding several hours of listening.

Tentative Review by The Christopher Currie: Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
In A Silent Way is a very unusual album, merging at least three different musical styles within its constitution.
As the piece develops, each of the musicians are allowed to make their respective statements (Shorter's solo is notable for its melody), with culminates in the drums finally being released for a more complete psychedelic-jazz statement by the entire group (with Davis finally dominating the music).
Either way, listeners were confused (and, in many cases, remain so unto the present age).

The music here is broken down into two tracks (although there are really four parts in total, or five if you count the reprise of the title track at the end) with the album opening with the epic improvisation piece, Shhh/Peaceful.
With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came centre stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again.

The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions The A.V. Club
The title is something of a misnomer: A lack of material, rather than an abundance, helped prompt Macero's radical reworking of the sessions into the album's released form.
But Williams was among the few who noticed one of the album's defining features at the time, even if he got the "faulty" bit wrong.
It places bits out of sequence, creating loops and generally treating the studio and the editing bay as extensions of the composing process, much like the rock albums Davis was devouring at the time.

The early sounds of Weather Report (Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul), the Mahavishnu Orchestra (John McLaughlin), Chick Corea's Return To Forever, and Tony Williams' Lifetime, and Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi (not to mention Miles Davis' own groups of the early 70's) are all heard on these tracks.

Pages of Fire: Discography: In A Silent Way
On In a Silent Way, Davis was moving away from "tunes" while utilizing more electric instrumental coloring and rockish patterns and splicing to manufacture the music -- ideas which seemed to take hold a year after his stunning Plugged Nickel recordings.
Here the music continued to show the distinct Davis use of suspension and space, but it was more amorphic and no longer seemed rooted in a clear, direct emotion, but was rather indirectly emotional in an illusive sense of reality.
In a Silent Way brought Miles Davis together with members of his brillant group of the '60s (Herbie Hancock/Wayne Shorter/Tony Williams) and emerging musical spirits (Chick Corea/Dave Holland/Joe Zawinul/John McLaughlin) who would launch Davis into the Bitches Brew era.
