 Hugh Masekela
Masekela produced several RCA albums by Makeba, to whom he was married from 1964 to 1966.
Several of these tracks are new versions of touchstone songs from the prolific career of Masekela, whose sixth album for Sony Music is set for release next spring 2002.
Masekela's mute-work on "Strawberries," from 1961's The Many Voices Of Miriam Makeba album, became a favorite of DJ Symphony Sid on his nightly WEVD radio show.

He had hits in the United States with the pop jazz tunes "Up, Up and Away" and "Grazin' in the Grass".
In the 1980s, he toured with Paul Simon in support of Simon's then controversial, but highly critically acclaimed, album Graceland, which featured other South African artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri, and other elements of the band Kalahari, which Masekela recorded with in the 1980s.

Hopefully this record is the first in a line of Hugh Masekela's other '60s recordings to be released on CD.
Masekela delivers an instrumental version of Makeba's 'Ntjilo-Ntjilo' as well as another song Makeba recorded, 'Phatsha-Phatsha', and it's easy to imagine 'Umaningi Bona' and 'Sharpville' being in her repertoire too.
True, Masekela was more than a jazz musician, but rarely will you hear a jazz-based record as poorly recorded as this one.
