Jones' music merged the technology-intensive sound of new wave with the cheery optimism of hippies and late-'60s pop.

Jones was convicted and sentenced to death for the November 1989 murder of Allen Hilzendager, the owner of a liquor store in Point Blank, Texas.
Jones, with nearly a dozen convictions and a prison record that stretched over more than 40 years, was condemned for the Nov. 14, 1989 fatal shooting of Allen Hilzendager, 37, at a rural liquor store about 70 miles north of Houston and not far from the prison that now houses death row inmates.
Between 4 and 4:30 in the afternoon, Jones and Dixon left and drove to Zell's liquor store where Allen Hilzaendager was.

 Review: Howard Jones, Bottom Line -Bob Gajarsky
Howard Jones first performed this acoustic tour in 1992 and, in support of his Plump Records album,
Howard Jones, adorned in a blue satin jacket, sat comfortably behind his piano - it was "acoustic", after all - while percussion veteran Carol Steele waited behind more than 10 instruments, ready for Jones' call to begin.
This audience, comprised mainly of people who were in their 20's when Jones first came to fame as a synth wizard, was hypnotized by the mesemerizing combination of Jones' piano playing and Steele's percussion wizardry.

 Review: Howard Jones, Live Acoustic America - Bob Gajarsky
If you're not a hard-core Howard Jones fan, and never saw him on his 1993 acoustic tour, the thought of the author of hits such as "New Song" or "No One Is To Blame" playing without the keyboard may seem a bit frightening.
Howard broke those rules as well; this time, he succeeds in bringing his fans one step closer to his songs.
Sometime in 1996, Jones will be releasing his next album,

 TrouserPress.com :: Howard Jones
All four of Jones' '80s albums are fairly represented on the exhaustive 1993 retrospective, as is In the Running, a fussed-over years-in-the-making tribute to Jackson Browne (or Tears for Fears; it's hard to tell).
Using loads of live musicians to load up the panoramic production, Jones — who remains a solidly appealing songwriter through it all — comes up with a bland mainstream record that sounds far more artificial than his rudimentary old synth-pop efforts.
The liner notes explain the modest, homemade album as a compilation of technically imperfect demos — of course, his proficiency is such that this stuff is equal to most Top 40 artists' highly polished perfection.

Howard Jones scored some of the biggest, most easily recognizable hits of the 1980s and in the process introduced New Wave Synth Pop to easy listening airwaves.
When New Wave's Aquanet glory days capitulated to fads of the nineties, Jones was forced out of the limelight, but he continued to perform and record.
Trading in his synthesizer for a piano, Jones's sound became increasingly intimate, eschewing techno-tinsel for a more organic feel.
