Hardcore hip hop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hardcore hip hop is a form of hip hop music that has confrontational, often violent lyrics, and generally sparse, gritty urban beats.
"Hardcore Hip Hop" is also the title of a single by DJ Shadow.
Groups such as O N Y X, with their debut album Bacdafucup and The Wu-Tang Clan's debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (see 1993 in music), re-energized East Coast hardcore, and the style soon dominated music charts with stars like DMX, Jadakiss and the Wu-Tang Members in their solo careers.

 m r b l u n t . c o m - Culture
The actual birth of Hip Hop is sketchy, but it is commonly accepted that Kool Herc, a Jamaican disc jockey, began mixing music at parties and improvising words to the beat.
Hip Hop evolved to fill the gap for the soulful old tunes of yore and, as a result, was heavily influenced by these forms of music.
However, as the militants and intellectuals of "Hardcore" Hip Hop were replaced by the thugs and gangsters of "Gangsta Rap," we see a huge change in the lyrics of a rap song.

Hip hop also influenced soul music in the 1990s.
With its inclusion of pre-recorded bits from outlandish sources, such as a French language instruction tape, the release was the more popular of the two albums that foreshadowed the self-referential sampling kaleidoscope that would soon envelope hip hop (and pop music in general).
The album was particularly successful with non-hip hop fans, listeners who were turned off by the macho posturing of many other groups, and who wanted a safer alternative.

A History of Rap and Hip Hop
Hip hop music is related to the griots of West Africa, traveling singers and poets whose musical style is reminiscent of hip hop.
The first hip house track was "I'll House You" by the Jungle Brothers - although this is not indicated on the album, the track is generally seen as a collaboration between NY house producer Todd Terry and the Jungle Brothers (an Afrocentric rap group from New York).
Rap music [origin: mid-1970s, New York City] is one of the elements of hip hop; it is a form of rhyming lyrics spoken rhythmically over musical instruments, with a musical backdrop of sampling, scratching and mixing by DJs.

A crowd-moving, speaker-shaking hardcore hip-hop album capable of bringing mainstream rap fans, underground heads and lovers of plain old good music to their feet in unison, Burgundy Brown melds confidence with introspection over melodic, powerful tracks that are body-moving and thought-provoking all at once.
His sound is firmly planted in the foundations of golden-era hardcore hip-hop, but with a futuristic, progressive vision that permeates throughout the record.
Burgundy Brown is the missing link between the catchy, feelgood accessibility of mainstream rap and the cerebral, introspective lyricism of hardcore underground hip-hop.

As the genre progressed, hard-rock guitars and hard-hitting beats were introduced by Run-D.M.C., the first hardcore rap group, and the scratching techniques were replaced by sampling.
Early rap records, commonly called "old school," were made by DJs scratching records and playing drum loops, with MCs rapping over the resulting rhythms.
Without question the most intelligent, artistic rap group during the 1990s, A Tribe Called Quest jump-started and perfected the hip-hop alternative to hardcore and gangsta rap.

I recently heard an industry rumor, though, that amounted to a challenge: Spend some hours with Jean at his Platinum Sounds studio and try to emerge being converted to the belief that this utterly imperfect artist -- heavy on political correctness, light on hit songs -- is one of the greatest acts in hip-hop history.
Jean's excruciatingly righteous new single, "If I Was President," released via AOL Music, isn't likely to boost his hardcore hip-hop credibility, either.
That he's favored by two former presidential hopefuls -- Al Gore, who gave Jean a public "shout-out" in 2000, and Howard Dean, who deemed him "fantastic" -- doesn't bode well: Any act deemed fit for political endorsement is likely to be as cutting-edge as warm milk.
