Habanera (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The habanera is a musical style or genre from Cuba, and is one of the oldest mainstays of Cuban music.
In the 1930s, habanera performer Arcaño y sus Maravillos incorporated influences from conga and added a montuno (as in son), paving the way for the mixing of Latin musical forms, including guaracha, also played by a charanga orchestra.
Guaracha (sometimes simply called charanga) also drew from Haitian musical forms, has been extremely popular and continues to entertain audiences.

 Charanga Habanera
This is precisely the structural aspect that the Charanga Habanera aimed for in its music and lyrics.
Calzado, the groups' director, had been the first violin in the Tropicana orchestra, and at the same time was producing recorded music for various famous Cuban singers for the Cuban music production company EGREM and was also doing musical arrangments.
The chorus at the very beggining of the songs, that even precedes the introduction, announcing the main theme of the song, and the essential musical elements of the song.

The Birth of Rockabilly - Afro-Cuban rhythms in the music
It wasn’t until Elvis’s recorded for RCA in Nashville and specifically the recording of the Rockabilly anthem - "Hound Dog" - that the syncopated Habanera rhythmic pattern was employed as the central, continuous beat pattern for a release by Elvis.
Whether intentionally or accidentally Rockabilly musicians chose Habanera patterns for their recordings, simply because the sound was unique - their form of rebellion against the stayed country music of that time.
In both cases the electric guitarist Scotty Moore plays Habanera like patterns on the lower strings while the bass remains in its traditional country two-beat pattern but in 1956 with his move to RCA, the contribution of the Habanera to Elvis' rise to fame is evident.

Including "Live in the USA", David Calzado has now released four CD's since the members of the original Charanga Habanera departed, in three stages, between the summer of '97 and late '98.
Hugo Cancio, president of Ciocan Music, reports that his company will release the CD in the United States, possibly as soon as April.

The seduction of her longing for a new life far from her roots is embodied in the famous song, "Der Wind hat Mir ein Lied erzählt", which became a standard pop song in Nazi Germany and forever identified with Leander.
Among the popular genres was the kitschy romantic melodrama, which had antecedents in pre-Nazi hits such as The Wonderful Lies of Nina Petrovna (1929) and Dreaming Lips (1932).
As Jan-Christopher Horak explains in his useful liner notes to this excellent Kino Video DVD of Detlef Sierck's 1937 soap opera La Habanera, "Much more successful [than propaganda pieces like SA Mann Brand] were star studded historical epics, spy and adventure films, and comedies that transported Gesinnung (ideology) in the subtext."

The musical descendant of the contradanza, the habanera or contradanza habanera (Havana-style contradanza), the habanera's distinguishing musical feature is its short, repeating 2/4 rhythmic figure in the bass line:
According to preeminent Cuban music historian Alejo Carpentier, the habanera was never called such by the people of Havana (for them it was just the local style of contradanza).
Already decade before, any music in Mexico with the habanera rhythm was called danza.

It was subsequently arranged in various instrumental versions, including one for violin and piano, under the title Pièce en forme de habanera.
The short piece for low voice and piano was written in March 1907, and was commissioned by A.-L. Hettich as one of a series of studies by contemporary composers for use in his voice classes at the Conservatoire.
It was composed at about the same time that Ravel was working on two other major works with a Spanish background, the Rapsodie espagnole - which also features another Habanera - and the opera L'Heure espagnole.

Part of the Habanera Association's philosophy is an attempt to elevate so called "poor" music cultures, similar to Habanera, including European ones, to the same level as western "high" culture.
The second branch headed North and stopped in New Orleans; in this city, it merged with the astonishing cultural variety of the time and again went into the brothels as entertainment music, coming out the other end as ragtime.
Recent studies have ascertained that habanera divided in two branches: the first migrated South, towards Argentina, mixed with the "gauchos" Milonga Campera and with other music forms of the marginalised communities in Buenos Aires, including the italians; eventually it entered brothels and became tango.

Working at Germany's famed UFA Studios (Metropolis), under the very noses of the Nazi authorities that would later force him into Hollywood exile and eminence, Sirk transformed a glossy musical vehicle for UFA's "new Garbo" Zarah Leander into a dark and intimate anti-colonial melodrama.
Legendary director Douglas Sirk's (Written on the Wind, Imitation of Life) La Habanera is a lushly poetic and boldly modern musical drama decades ahead of its time.
