Gustav Holst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Holst's compositions for the wind band, though relatively small in number, guaranteed him a position as the medium's cornerstone, as seen in innumerable present-day programmes featuring his two Suites for Military Band.
Holst and wife Isobel bought a cottage in Essex, and surrounded by medieval buildings and ample rambling opportunities, he started work on the suite that would become his best known work, the orchestral suite The Planets.
His music was influenced by Indian spiritualism and English folk tunes, and is well known for unconventional use of meter and haunting melodies.

Holst’s own experience as a band musician playing trombone allowed him to write band music as band music, not like other composers who would first write orchestral music and the try their hand at writing Band music.
Holst was optimistic that the Concert Band would be a more popular artform in the years to follow; however, this did not ring true.

Holst, Gustav(us Theodore von) - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Holst, Gustav(us Theodore von)
His musical style, although tonal and drawing on folk song, tends to be severe.
Side by side with the influence of English folk music was that of Indian literature (Sávitri is the story from the Mahābhārata), and a number of choral hymns and songs are set to texts from the Rig-Veda, translated by Holst from the Sanskrit.
The Choral Fantasia was first heard in 1931 and the Brook Green Suite in 1933.

GUSTAV HOLST (1874-1934): British Composer - Biography by David Trippett:
Holst changed the modality and rhythmic placing of the original chords; offbeat accentuation was used to disorientate the listener while the ostinato alteration of two unresolved chords portray the inevitable passage of time.
Holst tried through the work with the young composer, the Head Mistress, and a student and was so impressed that he agreed to include it in the forthcoming Morley concert.
Although first written for piano duet, Holst conceded that it only worked on the piano if the scoring for orchestra was taken into account, and even then some of the sustained orchestral effects were not at all suited to the piano.

 Gustav Holst
GUSTAV HOLST was a quiet, shy man who was deeply immersed in the world of music.
Holst drew musical inspiration from both the traditions of English folk music and the innovations of contemporary composers like Stravinsky or Ravel.
His innovative blending of the traditional folk music and the cutting edge of his time make "The Planets" a great piece of music, and the influence of his style can be felt even today in the soundtracks and symphonies of modern composers.

Dr. Dick's Blog: Up Close and Kind of Personal with Gustav Holst's "The Planets"
One of many striking sound effects in the suite is the conclusion of “Neptune the Mystic.” Holst calls for a wordless six-part women’s chorus, off-stage and unseen, their voices fading away into nothingness.
For instance, people born under the sign of Mars tend to be “headstrong, forceful, assertive,” qualities one hears in the steady onslaught of this opening music, it’s snarling, slowly uncoiling phrases, full of dissonances that stubbornly refuse to resolve the way you expect them.
Most people think the piece is a musical depiction of a trip through the solar system.

Although the plot is simple - after Savitri's premonitions of her husband's death becomes reality, she manages to outwit Death and have her husband restored to life - the mythic quality of the opera touches on profoundly human concerns: those of life, death and love.
