Guitar solo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The use of the guitar solo in heavy metal music was especially notable during the 1980s, where a solo was a common feature for a guitar-based band and a lead guitarist who was highly-regarded might be as well-known as the singer.
Unaccompanied guitar music is found in folk and classical music dating as far back as the instrument has existed, and the use of a guitar as a solo voice within an ensemble dates back at least to the Baroque concerto.
Although solo passages for guitar are found in many musical genres, the 'guitar solo' has an almost iconic place in rock, and particularly in the subgenres called hard rock or heavy metal.

Blogcritics.org: Death of the guitar solo? Pat Benatar: Go
But the solo became the MO of a whole lot of metal in the late 80s, and the song suffered because it was just a vehicle to transport the listener to the solo.
British guitar solos suffered the same fate as a result of punk, which had the same 'no solos allowed' ethos.
Giraldo's distorted guitar finally fully breaks through in the song "I Won't," and turns listeners on for about five seconds of soloing.

Flamenco guitar transcriptions - collections of soleares and seguiriyas falsetas
All sorts of flamenco guitar has been recorded, but today the overwhelming majority of flamenco guitar transcriptions are of solo guitar.
Solo playing is usually more ornate and less strictly held within the context of the rhythm because the flamenco guitarist, normally restricted to following the inspiration of the singer, is free to pursue his musical fancy.
The ever-expanding harmonic palette in guitar playing can also be traced through the musical structures used in the older falsetas that, over time, led to more sophisticated harmonies.
