Green River (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They were one of the first grunge bands.
They were possibly the first band in Seattle to mix metal and punk (as well as glam rock), leading to the sound known later as "grunge"—and Mark Arm, the group's singer, is widely credited as being the first person to use the term, though not in relation to the sound it has come to signify.
Steve Turner was the first member of the band to leave, citing his dislike of the metal leanings of the rest of the band.

After that the band started working on their next album "Rehab Doll".
And then the band then recorded their next release, two songs on the great "Deep 6 Compilation" on C/Z records with bands like, The Melvins, Skin Yard, The U-Men, Soundgarden and Malfunkshun.

Green River - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
Green River specialized in a dirty, sludgy, gleefully ugly hybrid of punk, heavy metal, and bluesy hard rock, drawing from bands like the Stooges and Aerosmith in addition to the hardcore punk outfits where many of the members first cut their teeth.
Green River started playing local clubs, and in 1985 they recorded two tracks for the compilation album Deep Six, the inaugural release on local indie C/Z Records (it also featured early tracks by Soundgarden, the Melvins, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard).
Green River subsequently began work on an eight-song mini-album for Sub Pop, which was released in early 1988 under the title Rehab Doll.

The band's excellent musical stylings have immortalized them as one of the ultimate southern rock bands, and it is demonstrated beautifully on all of their albums.
Both "Green River" and "Bad Moon Rising" made it to #2, and the album itself was a #1 record back in the autumn of 1969.
The group's third album, Green River, was released in 1969.

 The Green - Bio
The band thought it would be a cool switch and would also bring back a band with "The" in the title, which seemed to have been missing in the 90s.
The band made it to the second round of this battle of the bands at the Blind Lemon not advancing any further, but did put on a good show that was also recorded.
It was then that it dawned on the band that Green River was an established Seattle grunge rock band in the early 90s.

Seattle band Green River may go down in history as the first 'grunge' band, and were certainly the first to release a record on the Sub Poplabel.
Both bands came to the attention of Sub Popowner Bruce Pavitt, who decided to expand his cassette-based fanzine into a full record label and worked with them in producing the 12-inch EP, DRY AS A BONE, which was released in June 1987.
In May 1988 they released the mini-album, REHAB DOLL (cassette and CD vesions adended DRY AS A BONE) but the band were already falling apart with musical differences between Arm and Ament which led to them splitting in June.

Creedence Clearwater Revival : Green River - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
One of the differences between the two albums is that Green River is tighter, with none of the five-minute-plus jams that filled out both their debut and Bayou Country, but the true key to its success is a peak in John Fogerty's creativity.
For all its darkness, Green River is ultimately welcoming music, since the band rocks hard and bright and the melancholy feels comforting, not alienating.
This was a band that played rock & roll so joyously that they masked the, well, "sinister" undercurrents in Fogerty's songs.

The next month Green River started working on their first full length album album "Rehab Doll" with Jack Endino at Reciprocal.
The reason was ethics, half the band wanted a major label deal and the other half wanted to stay on Sub Pop and maintain the band´s punk ideals.

Green River is less formalist and fuzz-specific than Mudhoney, but it's easy to discern the latter's roots on this earlier vinyl scuzz.
Rehab Doll (the CD and cassette of which add Dry as a Bone) is the best example of Green River's neck-twitching meta-bunk, and even includes a few guest moans by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon.
The combination of Mark Arm's full-throated Ig-chunk vocals and the band's powerful downer-punk-blues-shit still sound mighty nice.

The band members were surprised by the massive amount of interest around the country in their first single, "Touch me, I'm sick," which is set for re-release on black vinyl "with a big hole and even a cover," notes Mark.
Singer Mark Arm and guitarist Steve Turner were two of Green River's founding members (and were responsible for most of the good songs on the band's first EP), but Turner, unhappy with the groups direction, left the band after their first record, while Arm stayed around until the final breakup late last year.
The owner greeted him enthusiastically, asked why Green River hadn't played here on this tour and even seemed interested in the fact he was in a new band on tour.

The band's two contributions to the set were "Stars 'n' You" and "With Yo' Heart (Not Yo' Hands)," the latter a song now more familiar from the Melvins' cover version, released on a 1990 single (Sympathy For The Record Industry SFTRI 81).
This is the scarcest Green River release, although black vinyl passings of the same single come a close second.
The first thousand copies were pressed on green vinyl, while cassette versions of the EP featured a bonus track, a cover of David Bowie's "Queen Bitch." (Rehab's title track, incidentally, was cowritten with 10 Minute Warning's Paul Solger; another album track, "Swallow My Pride," dated from Steve Tumer's time with the band.

 Green River Album Reviews
The band is named after the Green River Killer, and Arm certainly sounds unhinged at times (priceless lyric: "when I see you with that bastard hand in hand, well I just want to cut off your Goddamn wrist"), while the dirty guitars churn or grind behind him as the rhythm section thrashes about.
The band's sound, which is much closer to Mudhoney than Pearl Jam, can be fast and punky or slow and dirgey, but the energy of the performances rarely flags.
Still, theirs is quite a grungy little song, and Green River deserves respect for being forerunners of a sound that would soon shake rock n' roll to its very core (courtesy of St. Kurt).
