 Gospel of Mark
Dennis R. MacDonald, The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark (Yale Univ Pr 2000).
Because of the historical allusions found in the Gospel of Mark to the events of the First Jewish Revolt, the period of five years between 70 and 75 CE is the most plausible dating for the Gospel of Mark within the broader timeframe indicated of 65 to 80 CE.
In Acts 10:34-40, Peter's speech serves as a good summary of the Gospel of Mark, "beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached." Finally, there was not an extremely strong motivation for the early church to attribute the second gospel to one obscure Mark, the disciple of Peter, instead of directly to an apostle.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Gospel of Mark
Now Mark, xvi, 9: "But he rising early", etc., might easily be taken to favour the practice of the other Churches, and it is suggested that the Alexandrians may have omitted verse 9 and what follows from their lectionaries, and from these the omission might pass on into manuscripts of the Gospel.
It is surely strange too, if he had Mark's Gospel before him, that he should seem to represent so differently the time of the women's visit to the tomb, the situation of the angel that appeared to them and the purpose for which they came (Matthew 28:1-6; Mark 16:1-6).
Of the parables proper Mark has only four: the sower (iv, 3-9), the seed growing secretly (iv, 26-29), the mustard seed (iv, 30-32), and the wicked husbandman (xii, 1-9); the second of these is wanting in the other Gospels.

Gospel of Mark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The general theory is that Mark is a Hellenistic gospel, written primarily for an audience of Greek-speaking residents of the Roman Empire.
Mark is possibly the easiest gospel recognizable as an artistic creation of a particular culture of people at a particular period in the ancient world.
These also indicate that the audience of Mark has kept at least some of its Jewish heritage, and also that the gospel might not be as Hellenistic as it first seems.

Kuchinsky on the secret gospel of Mark.
If Morton Smith forged the secret gospel, surely Mark 16.3 is whence he got the image of the door, not to mention the rolling away (both the secret gospel and canonical Mark 16.3 use forms of the word αποκυλιω) of the stone.
However, the door of the tomb is a very big feature of the story of the tomb of Jesus in Mark 16.3, in which the women wonder who will roll away the stone from the door (εκ της θυρας).

What Stoermer finds really surreal however, is that many fans in the US are aware of Glamorous Indie Rock'n'Roll, a song which only appears on the international version of their debut album Hot Fuss to replace the track Change Your Mind.
Generally, the song is performed with merely the two vocals from the band, which Stoermer admits just doesn't have the same effect as on the album which used roughly twenty gospel singers.
However, the song usually turns out to be one of the highlights of the set as more often than not, the audience start singing along, resulting in a majestic experience for the band.

The Gospel of Mark - A rebel and a radical
Mark's gospel is also absent theological concerns that would become of importance in later versions of the gospel (as you will find out, Mark often made statements that would later prove to be downright humiliating for the church, as their theology evolved and evolved and left the simplicity of Mark far behind).
Mark's gospel is absent many of the later mythological developments found, for example, in Matthew and Luke or the mysticism and elements of Greek philosophy found in John.
Mark's gospel is carefully arranged, and this is best illustrated by the fact that after dealing with the issue of ‘the historical Jesus' at the very start, Mark then moves on to deal with the next most important divisive and controversial issue.

Mark thus shares with Paul, as well as with other parts of the New Testament, an emphasis on election (Mark 13:20, 22) and upon the gospel as Christ and his cross (cf 1 Cor 1:23).
The framework of Mark's Gospel is partly geographical: Galilee (Mark 1L14-9:49), through the area "across the Jordan" (Mark 10:1) and through Jericho (Mark 10:46-52), to Jerusalem (Mark 11:1-16:8).
The key verses at Mark 1:14-15, which are programmatic, summarize what Jesus proclaims as gospel: fulfillment, the nearness of the kingdom, and therefore the need for repentance and for faith.

Whereas in the synoptic gospels the emphasis is on faith as the prerequisite for miracles (e.g., Mark 6:5-6), here in the gospel of John miracles induce faith.
Further, in the first part of the gospel there are what seem to be vestiges of a pattern of numbering the signs (2:11, 4:54).
As SQ's title indicates, it was first of all the word "sign" that suggested the survival of an older layer in the text of the present gospel.
