Gas Huffer are a hard band to crack.
Their rough-and-tumble attack hasn't changed much over the years, yet their albums continue to be slow to engage the listener, which might explain why so-called "Gas Huffer fans" only cling to but one or two of the band's releases.
On this album, Gas Huffer embrace the same ol' styles they've embraced before--caffeinated, chugga-chugga rockers, swampy waltzers, greasy blue-collar punkers, quirky lyrics--but they're playing with spunk and gusto that this record doesn't sound as tired as the band members (vocalist Matt Wright, drummer Joe Newton, bassist Don Blackstone and guitarist Tom Price) look.

Gas Huffer has always had a unique blend of garage rock, punk and pop that always seems like the perfect soundtrack to some fucked-up punk rock Western movie.
Most noteworthy of the pile was the new Gas Huffer album, The Rest Of Us.
I do wish Matt's vocals were a bit less reserved on The Rest Of Us, as I'm a fan of his screamier, spazzier style rather than the softer mellow vocals on a few of the tracks.

Released in October of 1991, this was Gas Huffer's debut release on MT, as well as being their first long-player, featuring the beginnings of their punk rock sound with a psychobilly touch that they developed on many more long players after this one.
After their several MT releases, Gas Huffer moved on to Epitaph, as well as having released several singles on other labels, most notably on the collector’s label Sympathy For The Record Industry.
Released in January of 1993, this is their second long player and the record that really put Gas Huffer on the punkrock map, since becoming probably the most loved record by their fans.

The band's two albums, Tomahawk and the recent Mit Gas, were released on Ipecac Recordings, a label Patton co-founded with Greg Werckman, ex-manager for Alternative Tentacles.
Mit Gas is nothing if not a complex and polished album that belies Stanier's casual attitude.

Mit Gas oozes with a dark sound that the original created but then creates a momentum all of its own.
This is a welcome addition to the musical cannon of Tomahawk, and nicely contradicts the deranged country music of their self-titled debut.
The first track, Birdsong is very much like the self-titled album, dark-riffs, electronic noises and whispered vocals but that one song is the only true similarity between the two with the others bringing a true original feel.

That streak continues with Mit Gas, the sophomore disc from his latest band, Tomahawk, released on Patton's label, Ipecac Recordings.
Not that there was ever any doubt, given his track record, but Mit Gas delivers the goods for Patton's small, devoted cult audience hungry for rock.
It's not as though Patton and his bandmates Duane Dennison (guitar, as well as the band's leader), John Stanier (drums), and Kevin Rutmanis (bass) are worried about their lack of accessibility.

Splendid Magazine reviews Tomahawk: Mit Gas
By failing to rein himself in, Patton paradoxically destroys Mit Gas's credibility as a stand-alone album while simultaneously imbuing it with such an unbelievable amount of high-wire vocal shenanigans as to make it almost required listening, even if just to learn where that all-important line of credibility can be found.

Choosing to imbue Mit Gas with flashes of the bizarre, marrying experimental rock with nu-metal was a tricky proposition, but give Patton's bandmates credit -- they very nearly succeed.

Gas Huffer may have been around since forever, but with the release of its sixth album, the band shows that it's still got a few tricks up its collective sleeve.
The material, as one might expect, is the alterna-punk-abilly blend that Gas Huffer's gotten so much mileage from over its decade-plus career, but it still sounds fresh, upbeat, and often curiously cheerful.
