Balinese gamelan music can be split up into the venue for which it is being performed-temple music, Legong dance music, chamber music, processional music, and more.
The two usual scales used in gamelan music are slendro (pentatonic) and pelog (heptatonic-pentatonic).
Gamelan music is evidenced to be at least 1200 years old.

The pengendang (drumer) is the conductor of the gamelan orchestra.
Gamelan music is an integral part of all cultural activities in Java such as wayang kulit (leather puppets) performance, court dance, uyon-uyon (symphony orchestra performance), etc. There are two kinds of laras (tuning) in gamelan, namely slendro (comparable to minor key in Western music) and Pelog (major key).
The gamelan orchestra includes some singers (Pesinden), female as well as male.

Gamelan Tunas Mekar has performed and recorded music for gong kebyar using instruments owned by the Naropa Uniersity of Boulder, Colorado.
In his liner notes to Gamelan Tunas Mekar's first CD, released in the Spring of 1995, David Harnish says: "Gamelan angklung is a four-tone orchestra, one of more than twenty different types of indigenous gamelan in Bali consisting of gongs, metal xylophones, cymbals, flutes, and drums.
The other members of the group are Frankie Anderson and Merisa Bissinger.

The traditional dances and other events that call upon gamelan music are fascinating in their own right - among my favorites are the shadow puppets.
I've got their superb 1999 album See It Another Way, featuring "traditional gamelan instruments such as Sumatran gongs and Javanese zither, which instead of drums, bass, or keyboards (also present in the music) act as the driving force of the songs.
A couple of years ago we had a course on "different musical cultures of the world" and we went to the Indonesian embassy to play some gamelan music.

The University of Hawaii Gamelan concerts differ from the Javanese uyon-uyon because the performers here are members of a Javanese music study group-amateurs in the best sense of the term.
On the other hand, unlike Western musicians, Javanese performers have the freedom to "develop" a theme, to edit a piece, to drastically vary the tempo and dynamics, to "improve" or improvise on the music as they play it.
