Jansen's occasional grunt reminds listeners despite the orchestral and choir passages that this is after all a metal album.

Mark Jansen's occasional grunt atop the identical arrangement contrasts significantly--that the two vocalists duel between beauty and the beast makes for interesting listening to those new to the genre and brings back memoirs of early After Forever to longtime fans.

Floor Jansen's singing has never before been so strong and diversified, the combinations with choir and classical orchestra are at exactly at the right places and the use of melodious elements and supplementary samples in the sound make this album into one that simply nobody will be able to get round.
Sharp contrasts between Floor's vocals and the harder edged grunts are evident throughout the album; similar contrasts between the album's softest ballad-style tracks and metal-edged rockers exist.
Floor's vocal work soars in the ballad "My Choice," the title track of the band's single released after the mini-album.

This is without a doubt Floor Jansen at her best, After Forever at their best, and this disc shows why they have been at the top of the heap in this genre, and will continue to be with performances like this one.
One aspect that the band never forgets or leaves out is the glorious melodies that surround each song and fill the story with the emotion that it needs to tell the tale of tragedy.
Even if you don't like the "Beast," you will melt over the goddess-like vocals of Floor Jansen, and her performance is worth the price of the disc alone.

On this CD it is evident that the voice of Floor is even more “dominant” than on the previous albums, but it is also clear that the music has changed from gothic metal to darker, heavier, powerful metal.
During the more tranquil passages the voice of Floor Jansen, generally playing the role of the child, sings of her plight as a child who is but an annoying presence that her career-obsessed parents prefer to ignore.
Thankfully, the loss of Mark Jansen doesn’t seem to have had a particularly detrimental effect on the band’s song-writing abilities, and the majority of the tracks on this album work very well indeed.

The Phantom Agony, Epica's debut album, proves that the band is every bit as good as the aforementioned fellow Dutch bands, featuring wonderfully flawless soprano vocals from Simons (along with the rare male death growl, a nice touch), and rich, majestic classically-influenced symphonic gothic metal.

The shared lyric writing duties of Floor and Mark allow their song meanings to be diverse, with some lyrical themes focussed around the Islamic religion, even quoting the Quo'ran at points and some from a more personal, emotional perspective.
Their 2000 debut, Prison of Desire, was not exactly ground breaking but the epic atmosphere of the record, created by Latin choral chants and lush keyboards, makes it a very enjoyable listen and an accomplished first album.

Alongside guitarists Sander Gommans and Mark Jansen, bassist Luuk van Gerven, keyboardist Jack Driessen, and drummer Joep Beckers, she helped transform mid-'90s metal band Apocalyps into After Forever while most members were still in their teens.
With their profile now rising fast (at least domestically), two singles, "Emphasis" and "Monolith of Doubt," were extracted from the latter album to title E.P. releases, and Floor also found time to lend her talents to space-metal composer Arjen Anthony Lucassen's vaunted Star One project.
Signing with Transmission Records, the band issued their debut album, Prison of Desire to great acclaim in the year 2000, then quickly followed it with 2001's more refined Decipher (featuring new keyboard player Lando van Gils, and drummer Andre Borgman).

Whether this is the case by nature or design, one feels her talents are being underutilized; but then, perhaps Jansen didn't want her monopolizing the proceedings like the aforementioned Floor (although they apparently have no problem objectifying her sensual image on the album's cover).
Clearly patterned on Jansen's former band, Epica fuses his deathly croaking with the angelic tones of a classically trained mezzo-soprano named Simone Simons, over a lush foundation of symphonic power metal.

BNR Metal Pages -- After Forever
After Forever has slightly more classical and progressive influences than others, and one of the best soprano vocalists in all of metal in Floor Jansen -- she is the dominant vocalist here, but the typical male death vocals pop up occasionally, and a full choir adds texture to some of the songs as well.
The songs are slow to mid-paced, with a few occasional power metal bursts (as on "Inimical Chimera"), with keyboards and guitars intertwining quite nicely with Floor's flawless voice.
The band has released three CDs since Prison Of Desire, with their most recent being 2004's Invisible Circles.

The story’s climax is reached with “Two Sides” and “Victim Of Choices” shortly followed by “Reflections” which ties various melodies and atmospheres from the album together into a lively theatrical epic.
It’s a concept album, a very complicated one that circles around serious themes such as faith, choice, love, isolation and computers (well, computers aren’t only for used for fun and games hehe) all interwoven into an impressive storyline, so anything but simplicity is needed to take the listener into the heart of matters.
