Figured bass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A form of figured bass is used in notation of accordion music; another simplified form is used to notate guitar chords.
A part notated with figured bass consists of a bass-line notated with notes on a musical staff plus added numbers and accidentals beneath the staff to indicate at what intervals above the bass notes should be played, and therefore which inversions of which chords are to be played.
The figured bass notation, described below, is a guide, but performers are expected to use their musical judgment and the other instruments or voices as a guide.

 figured bass
Figures indicate the interval above the bass of the note which characterises the chord.
The flattening of the third is made on the assumption that the composer was thinking in terms of G minor, despite the one-flat signature, and that the change to the D major of the next bar should not be anticipated.
It is best to start with early 17th century music, where figuring is sparse and the choice of chords usually simple, before trying quicker-moving and more complicated music of the later baroque.

 Music 15100 Resources
Figured bass is a notational shorthand developed in the early seventeenth century for ensemble music.
For instance, if the singer's part made a 5th above the bass and the violin a 3rd (or some octave-duplicate of those intervals), neither interval would be notated.
Because figured bass was a shorthand, the intervals that were most common above the bass were not notated.

 Chords
Figured bass indicates the bass note and the intervals above that note.
The third above the bass, however, is a commonly altered interval, so lazy musicians have often used only an accidental with no number to specify an altered third.
When an accidental needs to be added to a note, the accidental is added before the number that indicates that pitch's interval above the bass.

This explains why there are so many early editions labeled thus: for "violin and bass", "violin and cello", "cello and bass", "violin and bass violin or harpsichord".
Because a music which lacks a strong bass always leaves much to be desired by the ear.
Handel's famous Water Music was published in 1733 with a "thorough Bass for Harpsichord or Bass Violin".

6 under a bass note implies 6 and 3, which means that above the bass there are intervals of a sixth and a third or compounds of these intervals.
Both a 6 and a 4 under the bass means that the intervals, sixth and fourth appear above the bass; result, second inversion chord.
An accidental in front of a number means that interval above the bass should have the same accidental.

the intervals do not necessarily appear above the bass in the order in which they are figured, a 3, for example can refer to any third above the bass even if there is one or more octaves in between.
As the example below shows, if there is an accidental on its own it applies to the note a third above the bass (in this case the B flat).
It also links to a short introduction to the study of tonality as well as a reminder of some basics (note and interval labels, clefs and transpositions).

It features in many kinds of traditional music, including flamenco, Carnatic music, Pygmy and other African music, and was once an important element in classical music (see cadenza and figured bass).
Improvisation can be structured, with certain rules constraining the improvisation (for example, "make up a song about bicycles", "use these chord changes", and so on), or can have no such constraints (free improvisation).

Arabic numerals are used for figured bass or figuring and indicate notes above the Bass voice, primarily as simple intervals.
The Arabic numerals of figured bass refer to diatonic intervals by name.
When accidentals are used, such as with the dominant chord in minor, the same accidental must appear in the figured bass.

Numerical figures indicate alterations of the normal triad: a "6" meant that the fifth interval above the root would be replaced by the sixth.
(See measure 2.) Adding a "4" to this figuration meant that the third interval (C) should be replaced by the fourth (D).
They show (and play aloud) famous examples of thorough-bass accompaniment drawn from Johann David Heinichen's Der General-Bass in der Composition [Thorough-Bass in Composition] (1728).

At best, the figures *notate* the voice leading expected by the composer, but the theory of thouroug bass, that I know, never states any independent voice-leading rule.
But Schenker is right to thing that a full understanding of 18th-century music should complement thorough bass by a consideration of scale degrees (a point of view that Rothgeb apparently does not share, see below).
They merely do not share the same epistemologic status, as I mentioned before.
