Topic: Ferde Grofé

 Composer
In 1915 Grofé was playing at the Portola Louvre in San Francisco where musicians would drop in after hours to hear his original arrangements and jazz improvisations.
One of the musicians in the audience was Paul Whiteman, whose orchestra Grofé joined in 1917 as pianist, permanently employed from 1920 for the next twelve years as pianist, assistant conductor, orchestrator and librarian.
In 1906 Grofé left home to work variously as a bookbinder, truck driver, usher, newsboy, elevator operator, lithographer, typesetter and steelworker, studying violin and piano in his spare time.

In his youth he studied piano and violin, played for dances, parades and picnics and began composing.
Arturo Toscanini and his NBC Symphony Orchestra made a recording in 1945 that quickly became a best-seller.
It surely is Grofe's LOUDEST music, beginning with "Thunder of the Waves," describing the masses of cascading water, and continuing with "Devil's Hole Massacre" in which the Indian ambush of a British wagon train in September 1763 is described quite vividly.

 The Big Band Arrangers
Grofé and his band were also heard on various radio shows including The Fred Allen Show (1934), The Burns and Allen Show (1935-6), and Saturday Night Party (1936-7).
Thanks to frequent rehearsals, Whiteman's iron discipline, and Ferde Grofé's delightful arrangements, the band became a "hit" with New Yorkers.
Grofe was the first arranger to come up with different orchestrations for the various choruses of a given song.

 :: The Youngstown Symphony ::
The task of orchestrating the music to suit Paul Whiteman's orchestra (for which it was composed) was given to Ferde Grof who completed his work on February 4.
Due to the lack of time and because, after all, the Rhapsody was to be played by the Whiteman band (now dignified as the "Whiteman Orchestra"), it seemed imminently logical to have the band's arranger, Ferde Grof orchestrate Gershwin's composition.
Whiteman crowned himself as "King of Jazz" but his music's only commonality with true jazz was in Grof‚'s use of jazz-like solos for members of the band.

 Ferde Grofé
Grofé arranged music and composed original pieces in a symphonic jazz style.
Grofé's own works included Mississippi: A Journey in Tones in 1925, Metropolis: A Fantasie in Blue in 1928, and the Grand Canyon Suite in 1931.
Later, Grofé worked as an arranger of music by other composers, especially "jazzy-sounding" pieces.

Music For Moderns V.1: 1927-1928 - Paul Whiteman
Together, they popularised "symphonic jazz", a modern, concert-hall amalgam scored on classical lines, sophisticated orchestrations played by men in evening dress, controlled by a man wielding a baton, with nothing left to chance: classics devised - or rather, disguised - as jazz!
A number of Whiteman's best musicians also shone as arrangers.
In this experimentation, Whiteman was inestimably aided by the New York-born pianist (and ex-Los Angeles Symphony viola-player) Ferde Grof (1892-1972).

GERSHWIN, George : MusicWeb Encyclopaedia of Popular Music
A second Gershwin Rhapsody is still rarely heard in Gershwin's original version.
Girl Crazy was filmed '32, '43 with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, and '66 as the lamentable When The Boys Meet The Girls, with Connie Francis, Harve Presnell, and Herman's Hermits doing 'Bidin' My Time'.
Gershwin's more ambitious works began with Rhapsody In Blue '24, commissioned by Paul Whiteman, orchestrated by Ferde Grof‚ (b Ferdinand von Rudolph Grof‚, 27 March 1892, NYC; d 3 April '72, Santa Monica CA).

 Art Hickman and His Orchestra
However, by 1920, when Whiteman first recorded for Victor, his approach to music seems to have been rather different from Hickman's, owing to the services of arranger Ferde Grof.
Hickman had been the most celebrated bandleader in San Francisco while Whiteman was still a sideman there, and Whiteman's band at the Alexandria Hotel in Los Angeles in 1919 had almost the same instrumentation as Hickman's, except for having only one banjo and (in photos) two tenor saxophones.
According to Clyde Doerr in a 1970 interview, Jimmy Thompson and his partners, owners of the Palais Royal and several other New York night spots, had been trying unsuccessfully to get Hickman to stay in New York when the "Follies" ended.

Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" was a "labor of love" as the skilled composer/arranger spent considerable time carefully depicting his impressions of one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.
Grofe had been a very successful arranger for Paul Whiteman and is still remembered for the very first orchestration of George Gershwin's "An American in Paris," premiered by Gershwin at the piano with Whiteman conducting in New York's Aeolian Hall in February 1924.

CLASSICAL MUSIC ARCHIVES: Biography of George Gershwin
His larger-scale works, melodically remarkable as might be expected, suffer from his haphazard mus.
education and lack of grounding in counterpoint, theory, etc. (Rhapsody in Blue was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé, but Gershwin himself scored the later works.) He went for lessons to Henry Cowell and Joseph Schillinger, and there can be little doubt that had he lived longer he would have progressed to considerable symphonic achievement.
