Though Fear of Music was musically distinct from its predecessors, mostly because of the use of minor keys that gave the music a more ominous sound.
The band's third album, 'Fear Of Music', appeared in August 1979.
The rest of the album took the sound and spirit of the first two LPs to its logical extremes, and track for track 'Fear Of Music' was as strong as anything the band have recorded, before or since.

Hartford Advocate: A Return to Brutality
The band's turn for the commercial was especially suspect coming on the heels of their prior album, the band's best-selling to date,
Though Fear Factory's blend of industrial beats, synths, with metal and hardcore elements, and both shouted and sung vocals may not be unique today, the band stood out for these elements in the early 90s, when grunge and modern rock dominated commercially, and the metal underground was all about the Satan-loving brutal death metal.
Herrera, who is one of the band's principal composers, says the band keeps up on the fans' shit-talking, and admits that he cares: "I've noticed that a lot of musicians say things like, 'you know, this is what we want to do and fuck what people think,' and I just think that's stupid.

Fear's explosive appearance in director Penelope Spheeris' punk chronicle The Decline of Western Civilization cemented their legend, and they found a devoted fan in comedian John Belushi, who talked Saturday Night Live into having the band on as a musical guest for the Halloween episode in 1981.
This group eventually became the new Fear lineup, and entered the studio in 1995 to record the band's first album of new material in a decade, Have Another Beer With Fear, which was released by Sector 2.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - FEAR FACTORY - Archetype
Without to name some bands, but the time to be happy about the split of the former genre leaders is now over, FEAR FACTORY are back and although “Archetype” has in no way any new elements, it’s exactly that sound of the new album, which discourages the whole competition.
Exactly those fans wanted to have FEAR FACTORY back, their search for new fans was finished already for a few years and so, the new album after this reincarnation had only one possibility how it should sound: typical, absolutely authentical and brutal as in their founding days.
With new power, FEAR FACTORY are back in the old manner and used principally the best ideas from their former released albums, ennobled them with their professionalism and created new great songs.
