Factory Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Factory Records was a Manchester, England based independent record label, started in 1978 which featured several prominent musical acts, such as Joy Division, New Order, The Durutti Column, Happy Mondays, and (briefly) James and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
Factory Records spawned a number of affiliated labels abroad, the most prominent of which was Brussels-based Factory Benelux.
Like the label 4AD, Factory Records used a creative team (most notably record producer Martin Hannett and graphic designer Peter Saville) which gave the label, and the artists recording for it, a particular sound and image.

durham21 going out Factory Records Retrospective
Their first album 'Unknown Pleasures' established Factory as a creditable label, and for the next two years Joy Division created music that was both beautiful and haunting.
Whilst New Order weren't working together they were all working on their own side projects, and the Mondays were enjoying a string of hits and hit albums, in particular 'Step On' and its parent album 'Pills Thrills and Bellyaches' (an album soaked in good vibes and high living).
But anyone who would doubt the influence of Factory need only look at the classic records they produced, the classic bands they fostered, the generation of musicians that they inspired and the scene they helped create.

 Factory Communications
The exorbitant recording costs of the Mondays and New Order albums, the effect of interst rates on the property owned by Factory and a general lull in the music industry were the main causes.
Later it was revealed that Factory spent GBP 15,000, to have the album remixed, because they were unhappy with the original mix.
Only but a shadow of Bummed, the album was unanimously voted best album of the year by the British music press, who had hyped the band to death over the course of 1990.
