Having helped generate the first wave of '90s pop-punk, Face to Face was due to profit from the mainstream success of artists like Lit and Blink 182 who had taken their melodic approach to punk songcrafting to new commercial heights.

Some folks say the Kinks created the 'concept album' on Face To Face: there's a unity to the sound of the album, every song is is an original, and nearly every song is a wry take on some aspect life in Mod mid-60'S England.
One illustration is The Beatles added real life sounds to yellow submarine, the byrds followed suit with the lear jet song and proclaimed this was the future of rock so the kinks duly pack this album with pointless telephone rings and storm sounds which add nothing to the content.
Here however, I think they were guilty of trying to fit in with the other bands of the time here which is ironic given they wrote a song about not being like everybody else.
