Despite being often criticized as shallow, I chose the Emerson set for three reasons: I have their Bartok cycle which I think is mind-blowing (I have listened to lots of other interpretations of Bartok's quartets, particularly the third and fourth, and the Emersons have everyone beat).
The Emerson's recording history shows a wildly uneven output: their Brahms, Bach, Schubert, and Mozart CDs are great contributions to the oevre and quite nicely done.
Finally, the Emersons recorded this set live (the only audience noise is applause at the end of each piece), and I thought that might be more intense.

The quartet is probably the most convincing challenger of the popular notion that chamber music must be airless and starched.
As good as the Haydn was, and as effective as the dénouement turned out to be (Debussy's Quartet in G minor), the Shostakovich made the concert an event.
That seems odd until you consider the necessarily instantaneous kick of a piece written for four musicians compared to a full symphony.
