Elliott Smith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smith most likely did not intend for this song to be on the album.
Although stated many times by the musician to be a double album (or a regular album with a "bonus disc"), it was released as a 15-track single album.
Smith learned to play both the piano and guitar as a 9-year-old and wrote his first song when he was 13.

While the band was recording Mic City Sons, Smith was also in the process of recording his third solo album Either/Or -- a record that would prove to be his most successful album up to that point.
The title of the record stems from the fact that Smith recorded a large portion of the album in the basement of a friend’s Malibu mansion.
Unlike Smith’s alternative acoustic solo symposiums, Heatmiser was a loud-as-fuck hardcore band considered almost too heavy for grunge.

Smith's songs often were compared with those of Alex Chilton, Nick Drake and the Beatles, his favorite band.
Smith subsequently signed with DreamWorks Records and recorded two albums; "XO" (1998) and "Figure 8" (2000) continued his critical winning streak, and took him to the middle reaches of Billboard's Top 200 albums chart.
Smith released five solo albums that received widespread acclaim from rock critics and garnered modest commercial success.

Elliott Smith: From a Basement on the Hill: Pitchfork Review
Unsurprisingly, From a Basement on the Hill-- Smith's posthumous sixth solo album-- doesn't break form: Released uncomfortably close to the one-year anniversary of his death, the album is riddled with helpless proclamations and self-incriminating taunts, clanging guitars and foggy, jumbled arrangements.
Smith's melancholy is big, pervasive and suffocating: see strummed chords and meekly mewed verses coated in thick, gloppy layers of heartbreak, lyrics hanging heavy with cold defeat, vocals seeped in doom.
Like nearly all of Smith's records, From a Basement covers his despair in sweet, perky, folk-pop kisses; and yet the album is still the saddest thing you'll hear all year.

Elliott Smith managed to make three albums that were better than good: Roman Candle, Elliott Smith and on the short-list of best albums of the 1990s, Either/Or.
People were not drawn to his music because it contained ruminations about being an alcoholic or an addict; people were drawn to his music because he was honest about being a human being.
More time passed and Elliott played shows that were being increasingly categorized as erratic, with the singer forgetting words and stopping songs in the middle.
