Eddie Vedder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vedder wrote the song lyrics as a "mini-opera" about a young man scarred by both the death of his father and a sexually abusive mother ("Alive").
Vedder recorded vocals for three of the songs, which later became Pearl Jam's "Alive", "Once", and "Footsteps".
It was at this point that Eddie, who had received a guitar from his mother on his 12th birthday, began turning to music as a source of comfort.

Pearl Jam - Eddie Vedder Interview by KNDD
Eddie: Um, when I go back and listen to the records, those are the ones I kinda like putting on, just the strange sounding things.
Eddie: Usually what I listen for, is I try to remember some of the shows where either something was kind of written on the spot or the crowds were particularly good, and were singing louder than us, or me. That's always gonna be good.
Eddie: Yeah, I think the main concern is that the focus of a tour or the focus of what you do isn't about playing music, it becomes about how you sell tickets or how you organize your [tour].

 Blogcritics.org: Eddie Vedder, thoughtful statesman
Vedder seriously, even about his music, would be a mistake and if he has his fans on a string then maybe we should take a good listen to his current music for any kind of subliminal brain washing tactics because they obviously aren't listening to his crap for any real substance.
Eddie Vedder is hot shit and so is his band pearl jam.
Eddie Vedder's a rambling pothead, but he's always sort of been on the right track and he means well.

He was Eddie's musical mentor of the time, and he followed every move the band made.
Eddie's musical influences in the past were very diverse.
In the eighties, Eddies musical taste turned to more of the commercial rock and roll genre bands that released singles scoring high on the pop charts.

 Eddie Vedder
Vedder dubbed his vocals over the instrumental tracks and sent it to the duo in Seattle; they were impressed enough with the results that they immediately invited the singer to fly out for a visit.
Through his friend and sometime Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons, Vedder (who been using his mother's maiden name since learning about his real father) was exposed to a demo tape put together by guitarists Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, both formerly of the band Mother Love Bone.
The three individuals meshed well on a personal level, and within days Vedder had made a permanent move to Seattle to begin work on the new band in earnest.

Alive- The Story Of Eddie Vedder
HOST Eddie, you brought up the thing about putting the three songs together, of which, I believe, Footsteps was the final part of that story.
One night at the Bacchanal club, Eddie worked as a casual roadie for Joe Strummer, the former Clash singer and guitar player who'd be recording a solo album called 'Earthquake Weather' in Los Angeles and was then doing a series of club dates to help knock the matirerial for the new record into shape.
Eddie played in a lot of bands during the next few years as the Eighties rolled into the Ninties.

 SALON: Something in the Way
Indeed, the few worthwhile cuts on this release -- "Sometimes," "Off He Goes" and "Around the Bend" -- are the simplest; not surprisingly, sole songwriting credit for those tracks goes to Vedder.
The "Harvest Moon"-inspired country swings of "Off He Goes" and "Around the Bend" are given a similar soft touch, and it works, because like Neil Young (his mentor), Vedder soars when unfocused jamming takes a back seat to rangy and distinctive solo vocals.
The punk tempos that drive both songs seem forced in the hands of show off-y hacks like Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Mike McReady.

Whether he’s bringing the Buzzcocks along on tour to introduce his audience to some English punks who were there at the beginning, or playing a cover of the Clash’s “Know Your Rights,” doing a pretty good job of imitating Joe Strummer’s hoarse and plaintive cry, Vedder is all about sharing.
