Eddie Hazel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eddie Hazel (April 10, 1950 – December 23, 1992) was a pioneering guitarist in early funk music in the United States.
Maggot Brain is perhaps the definitive musical statement by Funkadelic, and the titular track's ten-minute guitar solo is Eddie Hazel's defining moment, and the one piece of music for which he has remained a legend.
Perhaps apocryphally, George Clinton told Hazel, during the recording session, to "play like your momma just died" and the result was the epic sounds of Hazel's guitar.

One Nation P-Funk Page: Eddie Hazel
Eddie left P-Funk in 1974 to work as a Motown guitarist/composer, most notably playing on the Temptations' albums (A Song For You, 1975, and Wings of Love, 1976) and serving as musical director for Bonnie Pointer and Chairmen Of The Board before returning to the P-Funk Mothership in the early 80's.
The title track features Eddie in wicked form that is continued throughout the album.
He co-wrote every song on the album (songwriter's credits are given to his mother Grace Cook) and is in fine form on the guitar.

 ALBUM REVIEW
Hazel's guitar playing on the original three Funkadelic albums was mind melting, as he'd fluidly shift from rock riffs to funk rhythms to spacy, jamming guitar solos without so much as a hitch in his playing.
Hazel plays around with rhythmic guitar stretches for a while, though a little after six minutes in, he gives up and serves up more impressive lead guitar work that suffers through a false fade; when the track pans back up into the speakers, he decides to go back at it again not long afterwards.
Hazel's solo album wasn't really a vehicle for creativity, though his song writing abilities were nothing to be taken lightly, either - he did get writing credits on Funkadelic's stellar Standing on the Verge of Getting It On album, albeit under the psuedonym Grace Cook (Hazel's mother).

Also, the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like Eddie Hazel's album.
Essentially this is a 10 minute unaccompanied guitar solo by Eddie Hazel.
Supposedly, this track was set up as simply as Clinton telling Hazel to play as if he had just heard that his mother had died.

Eddie Hazel was the original guitarist for the legendary Parliament-Funkadelic mob.
Clinton had welcomed Hazel back into the fold briefly enough to record these seven tracks (four bonus tracks are included in this reissue) of pure funk.
The four bonus tracks taken from a 1975 jam session showcase Hazel's stylish perfection as a jam master.

Hazel is of course the legendary guitarist from the first few Funkadelic albums, and is one of the most overlooked guitarists out there.
Eddie Hazel's only solo album has been out of print for too long, and is briefly available direct from Rhino's Handmade line (or was when I wrote this-- www.rhinohandmade.com).
The first seven tracks here represent Eddie's only official solo album, from 1977, and a reproduction of the reassuringly funkdafied album artwork is included (the outfit Eddie wore to the photo shoot was a little embarrassing, you gotta admit).

Funkadelic: Maggot Brain ---Ink Blot Magazine
But don't let the name of the band, or their color, or the age of this album fool you: Eddie Hazel recorded - in one take - the solo against which all other solos would be measured if he hadn't been African American.
The group became a vehicle for the experimental, less commercial side of Clinton's musical vision, releasing records that were challenging, political, and musically abrasive at a time when popular music was becoming increasingly homogenized.
The story on Maggot Brain is that George Clinton, out of his mind on Yellow Sunshine, told Hazel to play the first half of the song as if he had just heard that his own mother was dead, and then the second half as if he had found out she was alive.

Hazel totally makes the song his own by slowing it down and adding an even more pronounced sense of longing, then there's the wicked molten guitar leads that are worth the price of admission alone.
But what the album lacks in songwriting and original material, Hazel more than makes up for with his guitar playing.
Barely over 30 minutes long, about half of the album consists of two covers (and a reprise), and the remainder of the tracks are little more than slightly fleshed-out jam sessions.

2 Walls Webzine - music review - Eddie Hazel
An excellent musical time capsule from the 1970’s, the album is a swan song of atmospheric euphoria.
Every guitarist will inevitably become a footnote in musical history and sadly Eddie Hazel became one well before his time.
A reworked cover of the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” has a funky piano lead and an echoing guitar groove, while Hazel embellishes the Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” into a plodding, drug-induced frenzy.

Julian Cope Presents Head Heritage Unsung Reviews Eddie Hazel - Games, Dames & Guitar Thangs
I am a HUGE Eddie Hazel fan, and unfortunately, because of the failure of snooty record execs to recognize a golen idol waiting to be resurrected, most folks of all ages don't even know who he is! This was further enhanced by Eddie's pseudo-mythological status as a member of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic collective.
The six full length tracks on "Games" (track 7 is a reprise) were designed as a basic framework to provide a launchpad for Eddie to do a helluva lot of soloing; the gems being the album's cover jams.
Well brothers and sisters, this is a brilliant funk-metal/rock gem that has been lost in the now, all-too-familiar, salvage yard of stellar albums that have failed to be rescued and reissued [to yummy vinyl or compost disc].

Fluxblog Is Just A Phantom Waiting To Be Gripped
So when Hazel got released from Lompoc in '77 and rejoined his former bandmates to record Guitar Thangs, there was the inevitability that sooner or later he'd have to meet up with his replacement.
Most of the song's dominated by this keep-disco-evil groove, a brief minimalist Hazel solo (done twice) and the intertwined free-fall chords notwithstanding -- it's a song mostly built on the intricacies of the guitar as a rhythm instrument, and Hazel doesn't even break out the real wailing until the three-minute mark of a three-and-three-quarter-minute song.
Meanwhile, his place in the P-Funk Mob was eventually filled by a teenage Mike Hampton, who eventually became so entrenched in the role that he began strumming Hazel's play-it-like-your-mama-died signature tune "Maggot Brain" during live shows.

The song's origins are supposedly rooted in a recording session where Clinton told Hazel to envision the saddest thought possible, his mother's death, and use that vision as inspiration.
Furthermore, Hazel took things a step further, integrating a heavy dose of funk into his fiery guitar work as well, setting the precedent for successive Parliament/Funkadelic guitarists, as well as later generations of funk-metal guitarists.
Furthermore, since both Nelson and Hazel were unhappy with their drummer at the time, they argued with Clinton about replacing the Parliaments' inadequate drummer with Fulwood.

Named one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time by both Rolling Stone and Mojo, Brooklyn native Eddie Hazel was the original lead guitarist for George Clinton's wildly influential funk-rock ensemble Funkadelic.
When he returned, he reunited with Clinton and The Funk Mob to begin work on this, his first and only solo album.
He cuts loose on fiery extended versions of The Mamas And The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and The Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." Elsewhere he taps the Parliament/Funkadelic tradition with "Frantic Moment," "So Goes The Story," and "Physical Love" -- all co-written by Clinton and Bootsy Collins.
