 Early Music - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
Early music is European classical music before the classical music era and after Ancient music.
All music of antiquity is monophonic, as polyphony is an invention of the Middle Ages.
Fragments of Greek music are, however, extant, most notably scraps from tragedy (a choral song by Euripides for his Orestes and an instrumental intermezzo from Sophocles' Ajax), a few hymns by Mesomedes of Crete (second century AD), and the Seikilos epitaph (dated variously between the 2nd century BCE and 1st century AD).

 Early Japanese Music
Movement is the basis of music in that music gives sound to the movement of the body—it's not overly simplistic to say that music is the sound of the human body in motion.
When musical performances followed the academic rules and types of music of the "Ten Styles of Music," this music was known as Togaku, or T'ang music.
Exoteric music, that is, music designed to be comprehended and performed by a large number of people, tends to be closer to the origins of music in speech and movement.

 What is Early Music?
As a very casual indication, music from the 1400s is early music in the sense which we use here, whereas music from the 1940s is not.
To turn a convoluted phrase, early music is etymologically the music which is earlier than the earliest music which was typically being performed in concerts at the time when performers decided to perform early music.
Precise date-based definitions of the stylistic periods of Western music, and by implication of "early music" in sum, are a rather illusory goal.

Early Music on the Web ... The Classical Music Beat
Early Music is a term used to describe pre-Classical Western music.
Music of the time is modal and difficult to listen to in an authetic way because of the modern ear's tendency to hear music in a diatonic context.
Classical music written during the Renaissance period, approximately 1450 to 1600 A.D. It is characterized by the introduction of the interval of the third into European art music (in the Middle Ages, thirds had been considered dissonances: see interval), and the continued development of polyphony (Greek: many-voices).

 About Early American Music
Opening chapters on Indian music, secular and sacred music to 1800, and African American music to 1900.
Colonial music was not so much music written in America before the Revolution as it was music that was brought here and helped define the people who were to make a new country.
The other type of music was often referred to as "field music." This consisted of the fifers and drummers who played during the march, during battles, and for the various camp duty calls which regulated soldiers' lives.

As well as vocal music, he composed many instrumental fantasias (one of which is recorded here).
The Early Music composers represented below were giants in their day (the Beethovens/Mozarts/Bachs/etc. of the 14, 15 and 1600s) So, in a small but determined way, I'm paying homage to some long departed, brilliant men, and trying to resurrect a few of their dormant musical gems - well worth the listen.
This is hard-core Early Music - strong, tight harmonic intervals (4ths/5ths) demanding counter-point, an intense piece overall.

 THE REBEC PAGE
It survives briefly into the late 18th and early 19th centuries as the "kit" violin, but it would be difficult to prove that the "kit" or "pocket fiddle" was really a rebec and not but simplified violin, or possibly a hybrid of the two.
In the SCA, this is music used for the basse dance Turin.
Either is more or less acceptible to the range of period music we have, though the later dance music (Renaissance) would favor the higher tuning to the lower one for the keys that are usually represented.

 Early Music Directory UK
This will cover not only the big festivals and venues with well-established programmes of early music, but also the smaller spaces, series, clubs and so on who might wish to have an occasional early music event alongside their other programming of classical, jazz, folk, or ‘world’ music.
Accordingly, the Early Music Network will now be creating a new Directory to help fill the gap between performer and promoter.
For some time we have felt the lack of a corresponding Directory of Promoters, which would be a similarly user-friendly way for performers and the wider public to find out details of who is putting on what sort of concerts where and when.
