Seduced by Hoffmann (June 01, 2001)
For that matter so is the entire cast of "The Tales of Hoffmann." Each in turn commands the stage, bringing lyricism, grace and fine acting chops to their roles.
Historical context notwithstanding, the hero Hoffmann is a modern woman's worst nightmare.
Fun, delightful, soaring and passionate, "Hoffmann" has everything one would expect or want from composer Jacques Offenbach's masterpiece.

 E.T.A. Hoffmann
Hoffmann's fiction is considered the first flowering of the horror and fantasy short story.
Hoffmann's early aspirations were towards music and painting - he left behind a symphony, nine operas, and two masses.
In the story 'Der Goldene Topf' (1814) Hoffmann depicted the battle between the artistic world and the philistine, and 'Das Fräulein von Scuderi' (1819) was about a goldsmith, a highly respected citizen, who becomes at night a criminal.

 little blue light - E. T. A. Hoffmann
Hoffmann's interest in music developed rapidly: he learned to play the piano, violin, harp, and guitar.
Hoffmann finally found work in the southern German town of Bamberg as a director of musical theater in 1808.
Hoffmann abandoned his hopes for a music career and, with the help of his friend Hippel, accepted an unpaid court position in Berlin in 1814.

CD Baby: ANDI HOFFMANN & B-GOES: Living in the Big Wide World
The result is a fascinating CD full of exotic hybrid songs offering artistically fertile settings for Hoffmann's worldly-wise storytelling, his unique instrumentation ideas, and The B-Goes' exquisite vocal harmonies.
On his most recent CD "Living in The Big Wide World", Hoffmann's music takes some surprising turns.
Yet even beyond crafting creative new musical formulas, Hoffmann displays a deepening awareness of the greater ties that bind us all, embracing the passion of a political vision based on the peace philosophies of Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

 Introduction to E.T.A Hoffmann
Only a few of Hoffmann's later works and major novels which belong to the category of fantastic satirical novels, such as Kater Murr, Prinzessin Brambilla, Klein Zaches and Meister Floh, were translated into English.
Hoffmann himself represents the double aspect of the bourgeois citizen and the anti-establishment bohemian artist which led to him being praised and at the same time misunderstood and condemned by contemporaries and future generations alike.
Hoffmann was part of the German Romantic period with his fantastic fairy tales and historical stories, and at the same time transcended Romanticism with his realistic, psychological depictions of highly gifted and artistic, yet tormented souls.

 The Opera Page
"Anyone who wants to stage Hoffmann should know all the surviving music that Offenbach wrote for it, not just what Guiraud, Bloch, and Oeser decided to make of it.
Hoffmann becomes so debased that he not only falls in love with the apalling courtesan, but murders both of her lovers."
For your next production of Tales of Hoffmann, let your audiences discover the extent of Offenbach's achievements for his final masterpiece.

 E. T. A. Hoffmann: Background Context
(Indeed, so attractive was this medieval world to a number of poets that they became converts to Catholicism.) Hoffmann, who at first considered himself essentially a musician, composed music for the Church.
Despite all this, or perhpas, at least in part, because of it, before Hoffmann was twelve he could play the harpsichord and the viollin beautifully, write musical compositions, and draw devastating caricatures.
Hoffmann's parents were members of the upper bourgeoisie who had been connected with the law and respectability for generations; but theirs was a preposterously ill-fated marriage, and what Hoffmann called "a comedy of domestic dissension" ended divorce before he was three.

 Hoffmann-Zeittafel
Hoffmann's Bamberg appointment did not only start his musical career, but also his 'sideline' as writer of musical articles and of 'musical fiction'.  The influence on Hoffmann of his own experiences ultimately also leads to the emergence of the poet Hoffmann.
In mid-April of this year, Hoffmann received an appointment as music director in Bamberg.  In June, he travelled there via Posen and Glogau.  It is very likely that he wrote his first musical story, Ritter Gluck, while staying there.  In September, he arrived in Bamberg.
Hoffmann began his studies of law at the University of Königsberg, but also his acquaintance and later love relationship to his music pupil, Dora Hatt, ten years his senior.

The theory was the result of collaborations between Robert Burns Woodward (1917-1979), the organic chemist, and Roald Hoffmann, the theoretical chemist.
Hoffmann continued at Harvard as a Junior Fellow.
Hoffmann: I agree that we need a general public that is knowledgeable about chemistry so that people in the various approximations of democracy that the world aspires to can make intelligent decisions, unseduced by "experts" who can be found for any side on an issue.

 Josef Hoffmann

 Hans Hoffmann (Getty Museum)
who copied Albrecht Dürer so assiduously that many of his works were sold as Dürer originals."Little is known of Hoffmann's training.
When veneration of the late Albrecht Dürer's art led to a flurry of activity copying his paintings, drawings, and prints in the late 1500s, Hans Hoffmann was the leading representative of the "Dürer Renaissance." Hoffmann's imitations were so admired that a biographer described him as "a diligent painter.
Hoffmann's nature studies have earned him consideration as one of Germany's first still-life painters.

Nutcracker -- The Story of The Hard Nut
Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, original name Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann (1776-1822)
It must be said, this production does away with the tired Land of Sweets -- huzzah; and the music is still Tchaikovsky's.
This is but one of the many Nutcracker CDs available; others are priced at a steal!

 E. T. A. Hoffmann
* Les Contes Des Hoffmann, Offenbach, libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carre from their stage play.
Hoffmann is one of those artists whose works were so influential in their own day that they have been adapted into oblivion.
Hoffmann can, even in his short stories, be described as gothic; but if you take the term 'gothic' in it's literal sense this is hardly surprising.

E.T.A. Hoffmann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoffmann's portrayal of the character Kreisler (a genius musician) is wittily counterpointed with the character of the tomcat Murr—a virtuoso illustration of artistic pretentiousness that many of Hoffmann's contemporaries found offensive and subvertive of Romantic ideals.
Hoffmann is one of the best-known representatives of German Romanticism, and a pioneer of the fantasy genre, with a taste for the macabre combined with realism that influenced such authors as
Hoffmann's work illuminates the darker side of the human spirit found behind the hypocritical harmony of bourgeois life, yet his wide-ranging influence upon and creative significance within the later German romantic period is frequently underestimated.

Josef Hoffmann and the Architectural Clock
Hoffmann did not take explicit positions within those feverish motions; they are assumed by his more ideologically eloquent contemporaries.
Wagner, Hoffmann, Olbrich, Asplund, Mackintosh, and Eliel Saarinen, among others, were reconsidered as representing the broken line in the descending lineage of the architecture of humanism.
Hoffmann’s work has that quality, and it is the sensitivity and the capacity to produce and make it work that has made Hoffmann an indispensable figure in that generation between the past and the future—a generation that so beautifully extended the art of architecture and the design of objects.
