 What is a dulcimer?
They are popular modes for the mountain dulcimer.
The word dulcimer means "sweet song", and that describes it well.
The Ionian mode is tuned in D-A-A and the Mixolydian mode is tuned in D-A-D. Tuners of different kinds are used to tune the dulcimer.

The mountain dulcimer is a Modal Instrument, with the frets arranged in 7 note scales, according to the patterns that pre-date modern Western Harmonic music.
The Hammered Dulcimer, or simply "dulcimer" to them, was an integral part of the bands that played for the festive hochzeit (weddings).
Other instruments, such as violins, cellos & clarinets, have been replaced by the accordion, but the dulcimer continues today in what is known as "Dutch Hop" music.

Dulcimers are usually tuned with a fifth interval between notes on either side of the treble bridge, the left side being higher.
The hammer dulcimer is capable of a range of tones from a sort of music-box sound to powerful and percussive piano-like effects which can stand out in any band.

 Hammered Dulcimer
The dulcimer was most commonly used for playing reels, jigs, hornpipes, schottisches and waltzes, usually with the accompaniment of a fiddle and guitar or bass.
Music educators at the time believed that studies of European classical music would be the best way to promote taste and refinement on the new frontier, so studies of the violin and piano were encouraged, while indigenous folk music was frowned upon.
The dulcimer remained most popular with the common people, and never quite reached the same level of social prestige as the piano.

On traditional dulcimers the strings are tuned according to the mode being used.
Contemporary dulcimers frequently include extra string notches so that a fourth string can either double the melody string or be equidistant between the melody and middle strings.
After the 1940s, the dulcimer entered the urban northeast folk music revival scene largely due to Kentucky-born musician Jean Ritchie who performed and recorded extensively and also published the first major instruction and repertoire book (1963).

The hammered dulcimer is a musical instrument of the zither family which is "sounded by striking rather than plucking" the strings.
This decline was due to the influence of people such as Lowell Mason who pushed the superiority of European art music over traditional music for a "cultured" people, and the violin and piano as more suitable for that music than the dulcimer.
Today in the US, the instrument is enjoying a continuing popularity as people are becoming more interested in traditional ethnic musics or are intrigued by the wonderful sound of the dulcimer.

So I just say the mountain dulcimer is a home-made musical instrument developed by people like the Virginians, Kentuckians and up-country Carolinians who settled Illinois in the 1820s and 30s.
It's one of the best things to come out of the folk music revival of the 1960s and 70s.

I stopped adding frets after the 11th fret--as the 12th fret needs to be right where it can't go, and the remaining vibrating string length is short enough that the 1/2 stud error actually sounds out of tune to my ear Fortunately, 11 frets is plenty for most tunes.
They are the only non-Lego components in the instrument.

A dulcimer is a kind of zither, known throughout Middle Eastern and western European music traditions since at least the 12th century.
Among nonwestern variants are the Chinese yang chin, and the North Indian santur, a three octave instrument which has become very popular in classical musical traditions.
