Dubstep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Throughout 2003 on Rinse FM and through his sets at Forward>>, DJ Hatcha began pioneering a new direction for dubstep, one that was to finally establish the scene as a distinct and new sound.
The key touch points of the early dubstep sound were Croydon's now defunct Big Apple shop and rejuvenated Big Apple records that pushed the sound.
Horsepower released records on the Tempa label, alongside Big Apple one of the first distinctly dubstep labels.

Hyperdub Vector - Dubstep Allstars 3
Hatcha's 2003 mix for Dubstep Allstars 1 was the sound of a new music taking flight, while last year's follow up by Youngsta was a little more restrained - a scene taking stock and consolidating its core.
Rather than dropping just the biggest tracks from the biggest names, he feeds widely on the energies of this growing scene, pulling together 28 tracks by 16 artists in under 60 minutes.
Both were crucial releases but they still left room for experimentation - something between the regular studio mix and the recorded live set.

Plasticman's music is considered dubstep, the bastard child of UK garage and broken beat, he says, and it consists of post-2-step swung beats, heavy atmospherics, and warped, distorted bass lines.
Actually working somewhere between grime and dubstep, he does the main Saturday-night show on the UK pirate station Rinse FM and has released music on tastemaker labels like Soulja and Aphex Twin's Rephlex.
What is true, however, is the increasing popularity of dubstep and grime with Bay Area DJs who hear the parallels between grime's slow 'n' low slang and Dirty South (not to mention hyphie Bay) rap, as well as between dubstep and homegrown funky breaks and electro music.

Spread over an hour, his recent excellent Dubstep Allstars 2 mix CD might have touched on all flavours from electronica to dub, cinematics to breaks and back via some UR epics, but it was done using the music of only four producers.
Sure there are other DJs in the U.S. who play dubstep releases, but if the brutal truth be told, if you're not playing new music, you're not truly contributing.
Despite the sound's five year existence, "Request Line" is the first dubstep tune ever to be played by grime DJs.

 PRANCEHALL (not a Wasteman)
The tracks on 'grime 2' were 100% dubstep.
The term Dubstep originated from the sound of DJ Hatcha’s sets a few years back, which comprised of lots of horsepower productions, benny ill, kode 9 etc. The sparse drums, intoxicating sub bass, reggae samples and dubbed out feel of these records resulted in this sound being called dubstep.
Although the dub influences can be seen in records by loefah, benga, digital mystikz and kode 9, many more artists such as slaughter mob, search and destroy, dj distance, vex’d and toasty are labelled as dubstep even though their records are not at all “dubby“.
