The Models - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Models' early style was a spiky, distinctive blend of New Wave, glam rock, dub and pop: their most notable features were Kelly's strangled singing voice, Duffield's virtuoso synthesiser performances (he used the EMS Synthi AKS, also notably used on Pere Ubu's Dub Housing), and the band's cryptic, slightly gruesome, lyrics (i.e.
The band played more often and in more places than virtually any other Australian band of the era - but the group tended to record completely new material for their studio albums, so many of their most popular early songs went unreleased until 2002, when a compilation album of early live material ("Melbourne") was released.

RollingStone.com: Dub Housing : Pere Ubu : Review
Dub Housing, the second album by Pere Ubu, has the effect of an extremely stimulating dream: images and emotions emerge from cacophonous songs only to disappear just as quickly, never to be found again in subsequent listenings.
Instead of sounding like a mess, however, Dub Housing coheres as a lyrical work devoid of the sentimentalism that so many lyrical works drown in.
In any given Pere Ubu composition, cracked and mostly incoherent phrases are wailed in a high monotone by lead singer David Thomas, while a wooden riff is systematically splintered by the guitars and keyboards.

Dub, punk, calypso, disco, acoustic ballads and hushed techno interludes.
The only song on the album with organized lyrics (sung again--and written--by Raye), the delectable pop of "When Worlds Collide" could be the theme song to a film, worthy of any classic James Bond.
I'd almost swear Phil Easter (the man behind Iron Halo Device) broke into my house one weekend and helped himself to a handful of CDs.

Pere Ubu: Dub Housing: Pitchfork Review
Releasing an album seething with deformed musical ideas like Dub Housing in 1978 was to set yourself up for financial failure and virtual obscurity, of course.
There are some discernible pop undercurrents on Dub Housing that don't hook you instantly-- rather, they tend to slowly unravel and reveal themselves with a little persistent listening.
And in today's disturbingly conservative times, Dub Housing still manages to stand out like a singular musical oddity in a rock and roll universe where base conventionality and bland stereotypes still captivate mass audiences everywhere.

Now, Dub Housing sounds terrific, and is probably the most consistent, cohesive Ubu record.
Their songs didn't get played on the radio, but there they were on a major label.
Yet, at their unsettling best, Pere Ubu made music that more than twenty years on is up with even the best of the Fall, and I strongly recommend getting hold of the Cooking Vinyl reissues and immersing yourself in their awkward, uneven beauty.

Dub Housing may not be the masterpiece everyone says, but it is a very good album and I can't believe you give this piece of arty twadle a higher rating.
The songs are very catchy things, similar in sound to 60s rock, new wave pop, dub reggae and even, okay I admit it, a little bit of midtempo punk.
So I listened to Dub Housing about fifty times in ten years.

The Modern Dance and Dub Housing (both 1978), and the earlier recordings collected on 1985's Terminal Tower, constitute the eeriest and most musically adventurous of all late-'70s American punk.
From the early singles through The Modern Dance, Pere Ubu's music -- Allen Ravenstein's uncanny, keening synth notwithstanding -- was recognizably in the pre-punk anti-tradition of the Stooges and the Velvet Underground; on the amazing Dub Housing the song structures disintegrated and Thomas's vocal performance at times resembled speaking in tongues more than ordinary language.
Somehow it still sounded like rock and roll -- unlike the band's subsequent records of the early 1980s, where Thomas followed his muse into found-object experiments, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and baby talk.

The earliest incarnation of Pere Ubu (late 70's/early 80's) produced some incredible albums ("The Modern Dance", "Dub Housing") but also a few so-so efforts, and this reminds me of the more lackluster albums from that period.
In 1995 they turned away from pop with the brilliant "Ray Gun Suitcase", which called to mind the classic "Dub Housing" album from 1979.
In 1988 they reunited and produced 4 albums through 1993, all in a much more pop-ish vein, that I enjoyed immensely.
